$30,000 Sidney's Candy colt tops Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Silver Cup yearling sale

Joe Nevills|Aug 08, 2017

The Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Silver Cup yearling sale saw a higher average sale price on Saturday than last year’s renewal, but the auction also closed with a significant spike in the buyback rate. A $30,000 Sidney’s Candy colt drew the day’s highest successful bid.

A total of 29 horses changed hands for revenues of $177,400, marking an 11 percent decrease in gross from last year’s Silver Cup sale, when 39 horses brought $198,750. However, the average sale price rose 20 percent, to $6,117 from $5,096.

The buyback rate closed at 52 percent on Saturday, meaning more than half of the horses offered did not sell, up from 40 percent in 2016.

Annette Bishop bought the sale-topper, a Sidney’s Candy colt named Mr. Candy Man.

The dark bay or brown colt is out of the winning Forest Wildcat mare Captivating Cathy, who has had two winners from three foals to race. He is from the extended family of stakes winners Christina Czarina and Tempt Me Alex, as well as Grade 2-placed Binyamin and Grade 3-placed Attemptress.

Saturday’s sale-topper was bred in Colorado by Menoken Farms, Jason Hall and Bob Schreiber.

Menoken Farms and Schreiber consigned the colt, while Captivating Cathy was purchased with this colt in-utero by Hall for $13,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Mr. Candy Man is the most expensive yearling out of Captivating Cathy to have changed hands in the auction ring. Her second foal, the Ghostzapper colt Gehrig, was hammered for $95,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale, but he did not meet his reserve.
