With 293 yearlings, Fasig-Tipton California sale biggest since 2020
The Fasig-Tipton California Yearling Sale on Sept. 30 has a catalog of 293 yearlings, the auction’s largest book since 2020.
The one-day auction, to be held at Fairplex in Pomona, is California’s only yearling sale.
According to statistics on Fasig-Tipton’s website, 143 horses were sold for $4,617,900, or an average of $32,293 last year. The average price increased 12.4 percent from the 2024 sale at which 163 horses sold for an average price of $29,334. The 2023 sale had an average of $31,089.
The 2025 sale had a catalog of 266 horses, down from 277 in 2024. This year’s catalog is near the highmark from this decade of 298 in 2020.
For the first time, Fasig-Tipton and the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association have enacted a $500,000 bonus if a yearling purchased at this year’s sale wins a Grade 1 race in 2027 or 2028.
The bonus will be divided between the owner of the horse at the time of the Grade 1 win and the consignor at auction. The bonus will be paid to the first winner of such a race during the horse’s 2- or 3-year-old seasons.
Horses sold at the auction or listed as buybacks will qualify, according to a statement released earlier this summer.
