$250,000 Tiznow filly tops Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita sale

Hip 36, a Tiznow-Soot Z filly, sells for $250,000 at the Santa Anita 2-year-olds in training sale
Fasig-Tipton Photo This 2-year-old filly by Tiznow was the $250,000 sale-topper at Wednesday's Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita sale.

Led by a Tiznow filly purchased for $250,000, Wednesday’s Fasig-Tipton 2-year-olds in training sale at Santa Anita saw a slight increase in average price, but a decline in number of horses sold and gross revenue compared to a similar sale in 2019.

Fasig-Tipton did not conduct a 2-year-olds in training sale in California in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Tiznow filly was purchased by Spendthrift Farm from the consignment of Al Pike Racing, agent. The filly is out of Soot Z, by Empire Maker. Soot Z is dam of Amalfi Sunrise, winner of the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar in 2019.

At Monday’s pre-sale workout session, the Tiznow filly worked a furlong in 10.3 seconds.

Overall, eight horses were listed as sold for $100,000 or more, according to sale company records. A filly by Maclean’s Music was purchased by West Point Thoroughbreds for $155,000. Consigned by Kim McCarthy Bloodstock, as agent, the filly is a half-sister to Royal Story, who was second in the 2015 Hut Hut Stakes at Calder.

The most expensive colt, by Street Boss, was purchased for $150,000 by trainer Peter Miller, agent. The colt is a half-brother to J K L’s Legacy, who was third in the minor My Juliet Stakes at Parx Racing in 2013 in her only stakes appearance. The colt’s second dam is Sacahuista, the champion 3-year-old filly of 1987.

Fasig-Tipton reported that 53 horses sold for a gross of $2,981,000, an average of $56,245. The median price was $50,000, and 15 horses were listed as not sold. There were 44 horses withdrawn, leaving just 68 to go through the ring.

The average rose 3 percent from the figure of $54,630 at the 2019 sale, which saw 69 horses listed as sold for $3,769,500.

There were two prominent buybacks on Wednesday – Ko Olina, a Stanford filly listed as not sold for $245,000, and a Nyquist colt not sold for $235,000.

Ko Olina finished first by a nose in a maiden special weight race at Santa Anita on June 19, but was disqualified and placed second for causing interference in the stretch. Ko Olina has finished second or third in three starts since May 21.

The Nyquist colt, who worked a furlong in 10.4 seconds on Monday, is out of the stakes-placed mare Elusive Temper, by Elusive Quality.
