$250,000 ad deal for Elliott

Stewart Elliott, jockey of Smarty Jones, signed what is likely to be the most lucrative jockey advertising deal in the sport's history on Saturday morning, according to the broker of the deal, Terri Marconi-Kirkland of Symbolic Sports Group.

The deal, with the telephone-directory company Inphone, was worth $250,000 to Elliott, Marconi-Kirkland said on Saturday. It required Elliott to wear jockey advertisements on his riding breeches and on his turtleneck in the Belmont, and to wear an Inphone baseball cap in the winner's circle. "This is huge," said Marconi-Kirkland. "This is ground-breaking. This is going to be so good for the sport and for the jockeys."

The Inphone deal came after another deal with Elliott fell apart on Friday. Elliott and Roy Chapman, owner of Smarty Jones, had initially brokered an endorsement deal with the automaker Ford, but New York Racing Association officials did not approve the agreement because the advertisement conflicted with one of the sport's existing sponsors, the automaker Dodge.
