$236,000 pick six carryover up for grabs on Wednesday

ELMONT, N.Y. – Handicappers could not solve the Belmont Park pick six for three consecutive cards, resulting in a $235,671 carryover into Wednesday’s nine-race program. The sequence begins with race 4 (3:09 p.m. Eastern) and includes four turf races.

The turf courses have been playing hard and fast and have kind to front-runners. There was a chance of thunderstorms Monday night, but the weather is predicted to be mostly dry thereafter, so expect fast and firm conditions on Wednesday.

A look at the sequence:

Race 4: A $16,000 claimer for non-winners-of-two fillies and mares going a mile kicks off the sequence. Daria’s Angel and Giant Ending are taking the biggest class drops in this field after neither did much running in her most recent start.

Daria’s Angel is making her third start since Robertino Diodoro claimed her for $30,000 at Fair Grounds in March. Diodoro won two races on Sunday’s card at Belmont, as did David Cohen, the rider of Daria’s Angel. She is drawn nicely on the outside.

Giant Ending is tough to take with a 1-for-20 record, but it’s that kind of race. She goes turf to dirt and makes her first start for trainer Bruce Levine. Formal Event could be a better alternative. Desirous won her lone start going a mile at Belmont last summer, but how did she lose last time out, when she had a 2 1/2-length lead in midstretch?

Race 5: In this maiden $40,000 claimer going six furlongs on inner turf, Be Gone Daddy makes his first start for a tag after three tries in maiden special weight company at Gulfstream Park. He is trained by George Weaver.

Trainer Jason Servis, who is 12 for 24 at this meet, sends out Uncle Pockets, who did little running after poor break in his debut, which came on dirt last November at Gulfstream Park West. Over the last three years, Servis is 8 for 19 with a $5.97 ROI first-time turf with a horse coming off a layoff of 181 days or longer.

Freeload finished second for this price in April and gets the aggressive Kendrick Carmouche in the irons for the drop from a $75,000 tag.

Race 6: This $25,000 claimer for non-winners-of-two fillies and mares at six furlongs looks loaded with speed. That should aid Pure Praise, who makes her first start for Jeremiah Englehart and who missed second by only 1 1/4 lengths when attempting a wide rally at Keeneland versus $30,000 claimers.

Giant Boxer goes turf to dirt and drops in price for Rudy Rodriguez. She’sakittycat gets a rider change from a seven-pound apprentice to Pablo Fragoso, whose seven winners this meet have an average win price of $31.68.

Race 7: Radio personality Mike Francesa may have to interrupt his WFAN drive-time program to watch Mongo Nation make his first start for this $35,000 claiming price and first for Rodriguez. He has simply faced better than these and projects to get an up-close stalking trip under Irad Ortiz Jr. He is a potential single in this seven-furlong turf sprint for non-winners of three.

For deeper pockets, Daddy’s Home shortens up in distance and drops to a proper level. David Cohen rides for Gary Gullo, and they teamed up to win with a class dropper on dirt Sunday.

Race 8: Fire Key won three of her last five starts last year in a busy 4-year-old season that saw her race 12 times. She returns from a seven-month layoff for trainer Pat Kelly, who says he’s using this six-furlong optional-claiming turf race as a prep for the sprint stakes at Saratoga.

“She’s pretty well ready to go,” Kelly said. “She’s been back since the end of March.”

Trainer Christophe Clement is shortening up two contenders, but he was hoping for some rain to take the sting out of the turf. Blessed Silence might be the better of his two runners as she possesses speed.

“Six might be a notch too short, but she works like a filly that’s got plenty of speed in the morning,” Clement said.

Weekfair was second in her U.S. debut, which came going seven furlongs, and won going six furlongs in Europe.

Race 9: Clement runner Pirelli Tower lost a head bob in the final strides of his only start. Clement’s numbers with second-time maidens are good, and this one gets a rider change from Trevor McCarthy to Irad Ortiz Jr for this New York-bred maiden special weight turf race at a mile.

More Than a Saint ran like a short horse in his debut last November, then was second versus open company at Fair Grounds in February. He is back with statebreds for his first start in four months, and gets Carmouche. Lem Me Tel Ya gets blinkers and may appreciate the stretch-out from six furlongs to a mile.
