At $230K, Good Magic colt sets Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale record

Nicole Russo|Oct 18, 2023

A $230,000 Good Magic colt set a record price as the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale posted some of its highest figures on Tuesday at the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Fasig-Tipton reported 153 horses sold in Tuesday's single session for gross receipts of $4,465,700, the second-highest in sale history. It just trailed the mark of$4,599,700 last year, from 142 horses sold.

The average price was $29,188, a drop of 10 percent from $32,392 last year, but still the third highest in sale history. The median was $20,000 to tie the record established last year.

The Good Magic colt, who is from the fourth crop of the champion and young classic sire, sold for $230,000 to C F Farm to establish a record price for this sale overall, as well as becoming its most expensive weanling ever. The previous high-water mark for a weanling at this sale, which was first held in 2012, was $195,000.

The New York-bred colt, who was consigned by Vinery Sales, as agent, is out of the winning Medaglia d'Oro mare Popstar. Her three foals to race are all winners, led by stakes-placed Lady d'Oro. Multiple graded stakes winner Advancing Star appears on the catalog page.

The sale's highest-priced broodmare, Bahama Banks, also established a record in that category, selling for $170,000 to Glen Hill Farm. The previous highest-priced broodmare at this sale was $150,000.

Bahama Banks, who was consigned by Sequel New York, as agent for Juddmonte, is a daughter of the late Arrogate. The unraced mare is carrying her second foal, to the cover of stakes-winning New York resident sire Honest Mischief, in a close cross to one of Juddmonte's prominent families. Bahama Banks, a half-sister to Grade 2-placed Millefeuille, is a granddaughter of Grade 1 winner Honest Lady, in turn out of blue hen Toussaud. Honest Lady is the dam of Honest Mischief, as well as Grade 1 winner First Defence and two other stakes winners.
