$225,000 Tapit yearling tops first session of OBS winter mixed sale

Nicole Russo|Jan 24, 2023

A $225,000 Tapit colt led the way as yearlings dominated the opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s winter mixed sale.

Tuesday's opening session was designated as the “preferred” session of selected breeding stock and yearlings, with a session for horses of racing age at the end of the day, those figures reported separately. The second and final session on Wednesday is designated as an “open” session, with the bulk of the mixed catalog on offer.

OBS reported 96 horses sold in the preferred mixed session, for a gross of $2,601,700. In last year's corresponding section, 147 horses brought $3,071,300.

The average price was $27,101, jumping 30 percent from $20,893 last year. The median soared 90 percent, to $19,000 from $10,000.

The session-topping Tapit colt, a March foal, was purchased by Dave Cannizzo, acting as agent, from the consignment of Stuart Morris. Led by this colt, the top eight prices of the session were all fetched by yearlings.

The session-topper is out of the unraced Street Cry mare Heat Street, dam of four winners from five starters, including stakes-placed Miss Boom Boom. Heat Street is a half-sister to stakes winner Dash of Humor, dam of stakes winner Little Bit O'Fun; and to stakes-placed Two Dot Slew, dam of Grade 1 winner Next Shares and stakes winner Angelica Zapata. It is the family of leading California sire Unusual Heat.

The top price from the horses of racing age section, and the day's top price for a non-yearling, was $72,000 for the winning gelding Riptide Rock, purchased by Randy Miles. He was consigned by Kaizen Sales.

The 5-year-old Point of Entry gelding has won 3 of 16 starts and was Grade 3-placed in 2021.

For the horses of racing age section, OBS reported that 89 horses sold for $1,466,800, compared to 81 bringing $1,499,700 last year. That led to declines of 11 percent and 9 percent for the average and median, respectively. The average fell to $16,481 from $18,515, while the median dipped to $10,000 from $11,000.
