CHURCHILL DOWNS Tuesday, April 28 Weather: Cloudy Temp. 64 Track: Fast LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was déjà vu all over again on the Kentucky Derby front Tuesday at Churchill Downs with the two Japanese contenders, Danon Bourbon and Wonder Dean, the most active members of the prospective field during the special training window for Derby/Oaks horses for a second day in a row.  The real star of the morning, however, was the track maintenance team, who miraculously had the course in excellent shape and rated fast following the first renovation break despite the fact the local area was pummeled by rain Monday evening and then hit again with an even bigger deluge early Tuesday morning. Danon Bourbon open-galloped a mile in 1:56 here yesterday and came back to easily better that mark this morning, completing the same distance from the seven furlong pole once around the mile oval in 1:52.09 after spending about 25 minutes warming up in the chute. He started out at a two-minute clip before being roused a bit to pick up the pace at the half-mile pole, going to the wire in 53.52 seconds without ever really being set down for his best.  :: Get DRF Kentucky Oaks & Derby Clocker Reports by Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team It figures to be class, not distance, that ultimately determines Danon Bourbon’s fate in this year’s Derby.  Wonder Dean, who worked six furlongs over the weekend, was not given an official time this morning but he too was encouraged to lengthen his stride midway down the backstretch. He completed his final half-mile in 54.71, then sustained that momentum while shading 14 seconds continuing out into the clubhouse turn. He also spent an extended period in the mile chute warming up prior to the move. Otherwise, it was pretty much business as usual on the Tuesday before Derby Day with routine gallops the order of the morning for the majority of this year’s Derby and Oaks lineups. Morning-line favorite Renegade was once again kept under a firm hold throughout his 1 1/4-mile gallop, cocking his head out to get a good look at the Dawn at the Downs crowd as he passed by the grandstand. Training at Churchill Downs has been quite a change of scenery for the Arkansas Derby winner who has done the bulk of his training this winter and spring in the relative quiet and anonymity of Palm Beach Downs. As he promised yesterday, trainer Brad Cox waited until the very end of the pre-dawn training session, just before 7 a.m., to send Further Ado out to warm up in the chute prior to returning to the main track to gallop a routine 1 1/4 miles of his own. He had his ears up and looked happy as usual coming down the long stretch and passing by the finish line into the clubhouse turn. He was under a tight rein but looked the most relaxed he’s been on regular gallop days.  :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Chief Wallabee and Emerging Market continue to look well exiting their very impressive works here last weekend while Right to Party had a partner to train alongside this morning – a very rare occurrence on non-work days during the Derby/Oaks window. Didn’t get a good look at all the Oaks contenders, although I did see Meaning and Bella Ballerina come by. Both looked terrific finishing their respective works only a few seconds apart on Friday. Explora, another of a bulky contingent of Oaks hopefuls who put in very promising final workouts for the race, also looks like a filly who bounced out of her extremely quick work in good order.       :: Get DRF Kentucky Oaks & Derby Betting Strategies by Marcus Hersh and David Aragona.
