Into Mischief continues to reign supreme among North American stallions as he claimed his sixth consecutive general sire earnings title in 2024.Into Mischief, by Harlan’s Holiday, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky. He easily outdistanced Gun Runner, who stands at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., by 2024 earnings at $35,406,575 – smashing his own single-season earnings record – to $22,488,544.Into Mischief also led the nation by individual winners, individual stakes winners, and Grade 1 winners.It is no surprise that stallions standing in Kentucky routinely claim the overall leading sire title. Kentucky is the epicenter of the North American breeding industry, and the statistics back that claim up. According to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred, Kentucky’s 192 reported stallions covered 16,543 mares in 2024 – or 65.4 percent of all the mares bred in North America.According to Daily Racing Form statistics, Thoroughbred stallions were active in 34 other states – with California, Florida, and New York trailing Kentucky in breeding activity, according to The Jockey Club – as well as across Canada, with activity north of the border centered in Ontario.Front-running Kentucky aside, here is a look at leading sires by earnings in each remaining state and Canadian province.Alabama: Doc N Bubba G (Cross Creek Outfitters) had four winners from as many starters, and his progeny earnings of $219,790 were more than 11 times that of his closest competitor.Arizona: Lotsa Mischief (Fleming Thoroughbred Farm), a son of Into Mischief, led the state by earnings at $1,121,899, the only stallion to crack seven figures.Arkansas: All of the stallion statistics here look at earnings regardless of progeny conception area. American Freedom (Leadem Farm), who moved to Arkansas for the 2023 season, saw his progeny earn $3,065,758 to edge out fellow newcomer The Big Beast (McDowell Farm) at $3,049,084.California: Grazen (Eclipse Thoroughbred Farm) held on to edge Stay Thirsty (Lovacres Ranch), $4,394,584 to $4,243,751. Colorado: Numaany (Stonedance Farm) had seven winners from 17 starters to edge Zip Quik (Menoken Farms), with three winners from as many starters. The earnings margin was $149,406 to $147,604.Florida: Khozan (Ocala Stud) dominated the state with progeny earnings of $5,679,578, more than $2.8 million clear of Neolithic (Pleasant Acres Stallions).Georgia: No stallion in the state recorded a winner, but Prospector Street led the state by earnings. Idaho: Boos (Treasure Ranch) had progeny earnings of $168,857.Illinois: Ghaaleb (Wildwood Farm) led the state’s general sire list by earnings for the fourth consecutive year.Indiana: Mor Spirit (Swifty Farms), who moved to the state for 2024, had progeny earnings of $5,289,682, while 2025 newcomer Tapwrit (Indiana Stallion Station) checked in at $3,143,023. No other stallion cracked seven figures. Iowa: Anchor Down (Iowa State University), who has since moved overseas and does not yet have a state-sired crop, had progeny earnings of $1,921,618, leading the state regardless of conception area. Free Drop Billy (ISU) checked in second at $1,296,078.Louisiana: Powered by his consistent graded stakes winner Skippylongstocking, Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator (Elite Thoroughbreds) led at $5,226,209.Maryland: Veteran sire Great Notion (Northview Stallion Station) has led the Maryland general sire list every year since 2018. He sired six individual stakes winners in 2024 and led the progeny earnings list with $6,086,941. Michigan: Unbridled Energy (Hubel Farms) had a 50 percent winning strike rate from his starters to lead the way in earnings.Minnesota: Liaison (Boehlke Farm) easily led with progeny earnings of $984,446. No other stallion cracked $250,000. Missouri: Nonno’s Boy (LTC Thoroughbreds), who died in 2018, was the only stallion in the state represented by runners. Nebraska: Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Court Vision (Pryor Ranch) has found a solid niche as a regional sire, easily leading his adopted state with progeny earnings of $1,200,624 on the season. New Jersey: Sea Wizard (Pegasus Stud), by Uncle Mo, recorded progeny earnings of $1,099,568, more than three times his closest competitor. New Mexico: Marking (A & A Ranch) recorded three stakes winners to lead the state on his way to earnings of $2,739,772. New York: Central Banker (McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds), who has stood in New York his entire career, earned $5,436,573 on the season – just $17,717 clear of Bucchero (Ironhorse Stallions), who earned $5,418,856.North Dakota: Bay of Biscay (Moen’s KB Thoroughbreds) sired three winners from four starters. Ohio: Dominus (Duncan Farms), who stood his first Ohio season in 2022, had 34 winners from 63 starters for earnings of $2,398,026. National Flag (Blazing Meadows Farm) had a solid strike rate of 27 winners from 34 starters to finish second at $1,726,041. Oklahoma: Multiple Grade 1 winner Flat Out (Mighty Acres) has been a leader since moving to Oklahoma from Kentucky. He led again in 2024, with progeny earnings of $3,527,746.Oregon: Harbor the Gold (Bar C Racing Stables), who died in 2021, continued to lead the way by earnings. Pennsylvania: Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing (Pin Oak Lane) was represented by 80 winners, including Grade 2 winner I’m Very Busy, for $4,163,190 in earnings. South Carolina: Done Talking (Elloree Training Center) had nearly 70 percent winners from starters for earnings of $741,556. South Dakota: Embezzlement was the only stallion in the state with recorded runners in 2024.Texas: Classic-placed Grade 1 winner Creative Cause (Marjorie Farms) moved to Texas for 2024 and immediately led his new state with earnings of $3,978,636 from his Kentucky crops. Utah: Northern Soldier (Tip Ranch), who stood in Utah before relocating to Wyoming, was the only current or former Utah stallion to record a winner in 2024.Virginia: Street Magician (Legacy Farm) led the way at $814,768. Washington: Alternation (Blue Ribbon Farm) moved across the country as Pin Oak in Kentucky shifted its operations. He had progeny earnings of $1,849,979 and was the only stallion in the state to break seven figures. West Virginia: The popular Juba (Casey’s Legacy LLC) sired 41 winners and had seasonal earnings of $2,088,253. Wisconsin: Be Valiant was the only current or former stallion in the state with a winner. Wyoming: Trojan Nation (Golden Creek Equine) was the only current or former stallion in the state with a winner.Ontario: Ghostzapper (Adena Springs North) moved to Ontario from Kentucky in the twilight of his career. A perennial elite-level sire, his Kentucky crops helped him to progeny earnings of $8,838,405 in 2024. That would easily outdistance Canadian resident Souper Speedy (T. C. Westmeath), who died in October, at $3,492,726.Other Canadian provinces: The consistent sire Tapiture (Highfield Stock Farm) moved to Alberta after standing his entire career to date in Kentucky. He led Canadian sires outside of Ontario with progeny earnings of $8,688,293.
