Godolphin homebred Immersive won three Grade 1 races, including the NetJet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, in an unbeaten campaign, and is an Eclipse Award finalist. But thus is the depth of the operation that Godolphin has another unbeaten 2-year-old filly who has earned Eclipse finalist recognition in her own right. Good Cheer carried the colors to four wins in as many starts, by a combined 32 1/2 lengths, to take a slot amongst the three finalists. “Her record really speaks for itself, and the style in which she’s won all of those races has been very impressive,” Brad Cox, who also trains Immersive, said following Good Cheer’s season finale in November. “She is another testament to Godolphin’s program. She’s handled everything we’ve done with her so far, extremely well, and I think we haven’t seen her best yet.” Good Cheer is by Medaglia d’Oro, a perennial leading sire who stands under Godolphin’s Darley stallions banner. She is out of Wedding Toast, a Grade 1 winner by Darley sire Street Sense. Good Cheer won her debut in August, going a mile at Horseshoe Indianapolis, by 8 1/4 lengths. She then leaped onto the radar with a 17-length allowance score going 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs. She improved her Beyer Speed Figure nearly 30 points, from 57 on debut to an 86. She would match the 86 in her next two outings, both stakes at the same 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs. :: Full list of 2024 Eclipse Awards finalists, including profile stories Good Cheer opened the fall meet at Churchill Downs by winning the opening-day Rags to Riches Stakes by 4 3/4 lengths over the well-regarded Claire’s Charm. Finishing third was multiple stakes-placed Sherbini, who had been third behind Immersive in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes. Good Cheer got another good class test as she capped the Churchill fall meet, and her season, in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes on Nov. 30. The race has a solid history, as it was won by eventual Kentucky Oaks winners and champions Silverbulletday (1998) and Rachel Alexandra (2008); another eventual Oaks winner and champion, Monomoy Girl, was second in the 2017 Golden Rod after winning the Rags to Riches. In the Golden Rod, Good Cheer rolled by 2 1/2 lengths over another benchmark filly in Quietside, who had been second in the Spinaway and then third in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades to Immersive. Good Cheer will now join Immersive on the road to the 2025 Kentucky Oaks. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
