After some adjustments in recent years, the major-market 2-year-olds in training sale season in North America for 2024 looks similar to 2023. Although there will be opportunities for juveniles to change hands at regional sales, digital sales, or at summer and fall racing-age sales, much of the activity will be focused on six physical sales held from March to June by the three major auction houses. The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. will offer the bulk of the crop over three sales in Florida. Fasig-Tipton will host two sales at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. And early blooming 2-year-olds in Kentucky may appear in Keeneland’s horses of racing age sale. Here is a look at the calendar. Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s March sale of 2-year-olds in training March 12-14 Under-tack preview show March 6-9 on Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack 2023 renewal: The sale expanded to three sessions from two, and the gross spiked to $71,110,500 from 460 horses sold, compared to $49,371,633 from 374 sold in 2022. The average price was $154,588, up 17 percent from $132,008, while the median was unchanged at $75,000. The buyback rate was 21 percent in what has developed as a selective marketplace; it was 12 percent in 2022. Recently, numbers under 20 percent are considered outstanding. Last year’s topper: Muth, from the second crop of Good Magic, was purchased for $2 million by Donato Lanni, acting as agent for Amr Zedan, whose stable is handled by Bob Baffert. Muth won last year’s Grade 1 American Pharoah and was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to be voted an Eclipse Award finalist. He won the Grade 2 San Vicente on Jan. 6 in his 3-year-old debut. Recent graduates: White Abarrio, purchased at this sale for $40,000 in 2021, owns three career Grade 1 wins, including last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. Speed Boat Beach ($200,000 in 2022) is a three-time stakes winner, with his biggest score the Grade 1 Malibu in his season finale last year. Cafe Pharoah ($475,000 in 2019), a multiple Grade 1 winner in Japan, and Grade 1 winner Eda ($550,000 in 2021) also are among the horses to pass through this sale in the past five editions. The sale broke and tied the respective records for average and median that had been established in 2022 as well. The average was $129,907, compared to $128,685, while the median was unchanged at $65,000. The buyback rate also compared favorably, finishing at 17 percent compared to 16 percent. Last year’s topper: A $2.2 million colt by young phenom Gun Runner was the most expensive 2-year-old sold in North America last year when he topped the April sale, purchased by Lanni on behalf of Zedan. The owner announced last June that he named the colt Collmus, after veteran race caller Larry Collmus. The colt has breezed several times in California. Recent graduates: Saudi Cup winner Emblem Road ($40,000 in 2020) and Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammer ($450,000 in 2019) swept the world’s two richest races in 2022. In the past five years, this sale also has produced Eclipse Award champions Storm the Court ($60,000, 2019) and Corniche ($1.5 million, 2021), as well as Grade 1 winners including And Tell Me Nolies ($230,000, 2022), Arabian Knight ($2.3 million, 2022), Arabian Lion ($600,000, 2022), Colonel Liam ($1.2 million, 2019), and Practical Move ($230,000, 2022).
