Zandon Upstart – Memories Prevail, by Creative Cause Bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones ($170,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Mike Ryan, agent)   As the first Saturday in May looms and the Derby Watch season nears its close, the favorite on the line of Daily Racing Form’s Marty McGee is Zandon. The winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, he is part of a fine spring for young sire Upstart, who stands at Airdrie Stud, which bred and raised the colt. In addition to having one of the leading Derby contenders in Zandon, Upstart is the sire of unbeaten Kathleen O., who will be one of the favorites in the Kentucky Oaks. Millionaire Upstart was a stakes winner against New York-breds as a juvenile in 2014 and also was multiple Grade 1-placed, finishing second in the Champagne and third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Early the following year, he won the Grade 2 Holy Bull and was second in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and Grade 1 Florida Derby. He did not win again during his 3-year-old campaign, but did finish third behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. At 4, he won the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap and was third in both the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap and Grade 1 Whitney. :: Kentucky Derby Headquarters: Get the latest news, info on contenders, past performances, picks, and more  Upstart is by Flatter, an A.P. He has been represented by runners such as Search Results, second in last year’s Kentucky Oaks before winning the Grade 1 Acorn going a one-turn mile; Flat Out, a multiple Grade 1 winner at 1 1/4 miles and a mile; and champion West Coast, winner of the Grade 1 Travers Stakes going 1 1/4 miles. Upstart is proving another source of stamina from the A.P. Indy line. Last year’s Grade 3 Ohio Derby winner Masqueparade emerged from his first crop, and Zandon and Kathleen O., both major-prep winners around two turns, are from his second crop. Unraced Memories Prevail is a half-sister to Cairo Memories, recent winner of the Grade 3 Providencia at 1 1/8 miles on turf, and to stakes-winning turf sprinter Cariba.
