2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint: One Timer works a half-mile

The unbeaten One Timer, headed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Nov. 5, was the lone Breeders’ Cup runner to work Thursday at a relatively quiet Del Mar, where he went a half-mile on the main track in 49.80 seconds.
The well-traveled One Timer defeated maidens on debut at Arlington before capturing the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine and then the Speakeasy at Santa Anita. The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint will mark his fourth race at four different tracks.
The remainder of the action on Thursday at Del Mar related to Breeders’ Cup horses mainly consisted of routine gallops for the contingents of Steve Asmussen and Bill Mott, whose horses arrived here Tuesday.
Hot Rod Charlie, one of the top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 6, put in an impressive-looking gallop for trainer Doug O’Neill, who has his usual large contingent of locally based horses here, as do fellow Southern California-based trainers Richard Baltas and Peter Miller.
“Just a 45-minute van ride,” said Miller, who brought his horses over from the nearby San Luis Rey Downs training center. He said horses like C Z Rocket, headed to the Sprint, and Mo Forza, who goes in the Mile on turf – both on Nov. 6 – were able to be bedded down in the same stalls they used during the summer meet.
