Seth Klarman formed Klaravich Stables in 1993 with a friend, Jeff Ravich, and they raced in partnership for about a decade until Ravich left to start his own stable on the West Coast. Klarman, 63, later partnered with William Lawrence, with whom he campaigned 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar, earning the duo an ownership Eclipse Award. Klarman’s racing operation now stands on its own after Lawrence elected to back away from the Thoroughbred business. The stable still had its usual outstanding year in 2020, finishing third in the nation by owner earnings, ninth by wins, and third by graded stakes wins to again be voted among the Eclipse finalists. Klarman’s stable was led on the season by Grade 1 winners Digital Age, Domestic Spending, Duopoly, and Newspaperofrecord, all trained by Chad Brown. Digital Age, a Grade 2 winner in 2019, stepped up to win the Old Forester Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Domestic Spending captured the second running of the Saratoga Derby – a race that will be upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2020 – before taking the Hollywood Derby to cap a 4-for-5 season. :: Full list of 2020 Eclipse Awards finalists, including profile stories Newspaperofrecord was a multiple graded stakes winner for Klarman in 2018, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
