2019 Eclipse Awards: Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence

Seth Klarman, who races under the name Klaravich Stables, and William H. Lawrence have owned horses together for 15 years, and recently decided to wind down their partnership due to divergent interests. Klarman was continuing to expand his stable while Lawrence was looking to downsize his Thoroughbred holdings.
The pair went out on a high note as a finalist for the 2019 Eclipse Awards as owner.

Their stable is led byBricks and Mortar, who won five Grade 1 races in 2019, including the Breeders’ Cup Turf. He is considered the favorite to be voted the Eclipse Award champion turf male, and is a finalist for Horse of the Year. Together, Klarman and Lawrence campaigned runners who earned $8,178,845 to lead all owners. On its own, Klaravich Stables was also in the top 10, by earnings with $4,968,082.
Klarman, 62, is an investor and hedge fund manager who founded the Boston-based Baupost Group, a private investment partnership. He had discovered racing in his youth while growing up near Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. He formed Klaravich in 1993 with a friend, Jeff Ravich, and they raced in partnership for about a decade until Ravich left to start his own stable on the West Coast. He later partnered with Lawrence.
Klarman and Lawrence also have campaigned Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing and Grade 1 winners Annals of Time, Currency Swap, Patternrecognition, and Practical Joke. Klaravich, as a single entity, has campaigned Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Newspaperofrecord and Grade 1 winners Competitionofideas, Complexity, and Separationofpowers.
