2018 Eclipse Awards: Glennwood Farm
Glennwood Farm, operated by John D. Gunther and his daughter Tanya Gunther, reached the pinnacle of Thoroughbred racing when its fields produced unbeaten Triple Crown winner Justify. The Scat Daddy colt, whom Gunther sold for $500,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, also is out of a Glennwood homebred, the Grade 3-placed Ghostzapper mare Stage Magic.
But, remarkably, it wasn’t a one-hit season for Glennwood, which houses a smaller broodmare band than many other high-end operations. Vino Rosso, winner of the Grade 2 Wood Memorial, also was bred at the farm and lined up against Justify during the Triple Crown series. Just weeks after the Belmont Stakes, Gunther’s homebred Without Parole captured the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting. And, putting an exclamation point on the season, Competitionofideas captured the Grade 1 American Oaks in December to become another top-level runner bred and sold by Glennwood.
