Broodmare of the Year Sweet Life has died at age 27. The announcement was made by Lane's End Farm, where Pam and Marty Wygod's homebred daughter of Kris S. had resided since 2008. Sweet Life, who won the 1999 Providencia Stakes and was Grade 1-placed, produced five winners from as many starters. Her first foal was Sweet Catomine, a Storm Cat filly who won a pair of Grade 1 races in 2004, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, to earn a divisional Eclipse Award championship. Sweet Catomine also was a Grade 1 winner the following year, winning the Santa Anita Oaks, and retired as a millionaire. :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Sweet Life produced a second Breeders' Cup winner when millionaire Life Is Sweet, a full sister to Sweet Catomine, won four graded stakes in 2009, capped by the Ladies' Classic. That year’s divisional Eclipse ultimately went to Life Is Sweet’s John Shirreffs-trained stablemate Zenyatta. Sweet Life was named Kentucky's Broodmare of the Year, considered the continent’s highest honor in the category, in 2009. Sweet Life also produced multiple stakes winner Calimonco. She was pensioned in 2018. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
