2-year-old Bad Read Sanchez romps in debut
ARCADIA, Calif. - Bad Read Sanchez became the latest winner for the hot freshman sire Warrior’s Reward and may have earned his way into a 2-year-old stakes at Los Alamitos in July with an easy win in a maiden race at Santa Anita on Friday.
Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Bad Read Sanchez ($6.80) fought for the lead with Masters Circle for the first half-mile and pulled away in the final furlong to win by 10 lengths over Red Button, who closed from last. Masters Circle faded to finish fourth in a field of eight.
Bad Read Sanchez ran five furlongs in 57.48 seconds and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 75.
“We were speechless,” trainer Doug O’Neill said on Saturday. “He’d been working well in the last few weeks.”
Bad Read Sanchez is owned by Paul Reddam, and is named for one of Reddam’s golf friends, O’Neill said. Reddam and O’Neill teamed to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with I’ll Have Another.
Bad Read Sanchez was purchased for $130,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale.
His sire, Warrior’s Reward, has won with his first four starters this year. Warrior’s Reward, by Medgalia d’Oro, stands at stud at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.
O’Neill said the $100,000 Willard Proctor Stakes over six furlongs at Los Alamitos on July 13 will be considered for Bad Read Sanchz's next start, pending a conversation with Reddam.
