BALTIMORE -- If the Kentucky Derby took something out of Mage, it certainly wasn’t apparent Tuesday morning at Pimlico as he galloped a solid 1 1/2 miles over the main track. In what appeared to his most rigorous exercise since his one-length victory in the May 6 Derby, Mage on Tuesday picked it up through the lane to the point where Daily Racing Form clocked him from the wire out three furlongs in 41.76 seconds while three paths off the rail. It won’t go down, nor was it scheduled to be, a blowout, but it was a good sign that Mage has refilled the tank following the Derby. “That race is over, nothing is wrong with him, he still feels so good,” said exercise rider J.J. Delgado. Assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. just called Tuesday’s training session “routine. He always picks it up at the end.” :: Get ready to bet the Preakness! Join DRF Bets and score a $250 Deposit Match + $10 Free Bet + Free PPs - Promo code: WINNING J.J. Delgado said he didn’t ask Mage to do anything different Tuesday morning than he had in his training at Churchill Downs immediately after the Derby and that trainer Gustavo Delgado Sr. and his son let the exercise rider Delgado -- no relation -- proceed as he sees fit. “When the horse feels good, if you want to go a little bit open [gallop], go open. If you want to stay nice and quiet, stay quiet,” J.J. Delgado said. “I do not want to fight with him. Whatever he wants do, I say it’s okay.” Delgado, 60, is a former jockey who has worked horses in the morning for decades. Based in Florida back in 2008, Delgado got on Big Brown for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. leading up to the Florida Derby and before he headed north leading up to the Kentucky Derby. Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. “This horse gallops the same. He’s a good horse,” Delgado said. Mage, the only horse from the Kentucky Derby to run back in two weeks, was one of four Preakness horses to train at Pimlico on Tuesday. National Treasure, First Mission, and Blazing Sevens also galloped. :: DRF's Preakness Headquarters: Contenders, latest news, and more Three Preakness horses were scheduled to arrive at varying times Tuesday including Chase the Chaos from Northern California, Red Route One from Kentucky, and Perform from New York. Coffeewithchris galloped at Laurel on Tuesday and will ship over the Pimlico on Wednesday morning, trainer John Salzman Jr. said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
