14 trials for Lee Berwick Futurity
Delta Downs in Vinton, La., has a card of 14 trial races Saturday night, all for the $662,650 Lee Berwick Futurity. The finale is July 12.
The Berwick, which is restricted to 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana, will be the richest Quarter Horse race in Delta history, , according to track representative Don Stevens.
Stevens is the announcer at Delta, but he will be at Evangeline on Saturday for the inaugural $300,000 Evangeline Downs Turf Sprint. In his absence, Jim Byers will call the card at Delta. Stevens is traveling to Evangeline to co-host a Sirius XM radio show with Bill Finley. Byers will also call Friday night’s races at Delta.
.Delta has a first post of 5 p.m. Central on Saturday. The Berwick is a restricted Grade 1.
◗ Nominations for the All American Gold Cup, which has had its purse boosted from $40,000 to $200,000 and recently received Grade 1 status, close July 1. The 440-yard race, which carries an invitation to the Champion of Champions, is at Ruidoso on Aug. 30.
◗ The American Quarter Horse Association has announced a new race, the $120,000 Mexico-bred Juvenile Bonus Challenge Stakes, which is for 2-year-olds bred in Mexico. It will be at Hipodromo de las Americas in Mexico City on Nov. 9.
