$1.2 million Fasig-Tipton purchase joins O'Neill barn

ARCADIA, Calif. – The Medaglia d’Oro colt purchased for $1.2 million at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale in Maryland on Tuesday arrived in California on Wednesday. Thursday morning, the colt was put to work at Santa Anita, jogging a mile.
The expensive price tag for the colt has left bloodstock agent Dennis O’Neill with a clear goal for the summer.
“The Del Mar Futurity,” he replied. “We’ll work our way back from there.”
O’Neill was joking – kind of. The Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 3 is the top race for juveniles at the track’s summer meeting and a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. O’Neill is hopeful the colt, who he said has been named Lebron J, can be part of such races.
For now, the task for his brother, trainer Doug O’Neill, is to prepare the colt for his career debut in coming months. Phoenix Thoroughbreds announced Friday that it had purchased the colt.
Dennis O’Neill said he paid more than expected for the colt who was his pick of the sale.
