$115,000 Danzing Candy colt tops final day of OBS fall yearling sale
A colt from the first crop of Danzing Candy sold for $115,000 to lead the way as the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s fall yearling sale concluded with its open session Wednesday.
OBS reported 260 yearlings – representing the bulk of the catalog – sold in the open session for gross receipts of $2,887,400. In 2019's open session, 267 were sold for $3,356,400. The average price was $11,105, a shift of 12 percent compared with $12,571 in 2019, while the median price was $7,750, a drop of 3 percent from $8,000 a year ago.
In one encouraging sign, the buyback rate for the open session was 21 percent, a small improvement from 23 percent a year ago. During this yearling sales season, a marketplace that was already selective became even more so during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, leading to higher buyback rates at many sales, particularly in the upper end of the marketplace. For example, the buyback rate for the selected yearling session that began the OBS auction on Tuesday was 41 percent, compared to 30 percent in the 2019 selected session.
After the sale's highest-priced horses, led by a $225,000 Not This Time filly, were sold during the selected session, the open session-topping Danzing Candy colt represented the ninth highest-priced yearling of the sale overall. Bloodstock agent Donato Lanni purchased the colt from the consignment of Lisa McGreevy's Abbie Road Farm, as agent. Abbie Road also sold the sale-topping Not This Time filly.
Grade 2 winner Danzing Candy, by Twirling Candy, began his stud career in California. His session-topping colt is the second foal out of the winning Street Boss mare Bosserette, a full sister to stakes-placed Butch Walker and a half-sister to stakes winner Meditations. French champion Hippodamia appears on the catalog page, as do graded stakes winners Lindon Lime and Regal Thunder.
