Red Knobs goes from claim box to Canadian Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Red Knobs was claimed for $50,000 at Churchill on July 3 and now tries to win Western Canada’s biggest race, the Grade 3 Canadian Derby, for his new connections.

Last year, Uncharacteristic, who was claimed by trainer Robert VanOverschot for $8,000, parlayed a win in the $100,000 Manitoba Derby into a victory in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby. Trainer Robertino Diodoro is hoping to duplicate the feat with Red Knobs, a $50,000 claim, who figures to be favored in the most prestigious race at Century Mile Saturday. The 1 1/4-mile Derby drew on overflow field of 13 3-year-olds with Countrified mired on the also-eligible list. All starters will carry 126 pounds.

Heads, Mendoza have key players on B.C. Cup Day card

Canadian champion Infinite Patience (above) has a half-sister listed to sell at the CTHS yearling and mixed sale.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Barbara Heads and Edgar Mendoza are one-two in the trainer’s standings at Hastings, and they figure to add to their riches when they send out a strong group of horses in the six $50,000 stakes races that make up the bulk of the eight-race B.C. Cup Day card on Monday. Mendoza is particularly loaded with possible favorites in four of the stakes and also in an open allowance sprint that drew a stakes-quality field, including Be Quick, who won the $50,000 Lieutenant Governor’s for Mendoza on July 1.

The stakes-rich card gets under way at 2 p.m. Pacific.

Loseth Stakes, Supernaturel offer distance tests; Gunfighter looks solid

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Distance is the question for most of the horses entered in the two stakes for 3-year-olds at Hastings on Sunday. After all, none of the five fillies in the $50,000 Supernaturel have gone the mile and a sixteenth distance and the six horses entered in the $50,000 Chris Loseth will be going three turns for the first time.

One sprint stakes clear-cut, the other wide-open

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – A couple of $50,000 stakes races for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs share the spotlight on Saturday at Hastings, and they shape up very differently.

First up in the fourth race is the River Rock Casino for fillies where U Did It and Belcarra Park stand out in a race that drew five horses. The Ross McLeod goes as the sixth race and just about any of the seven horses entered has a shot at winning.

Post time for the first of seven races is 2 p.m. Pacific. The pick five is starting to grow with a $16,868 carryover in the jackpot wager.
