Del Mar

Key contenders in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile

David Grening|Nov 01, 2017
Bolt d'Oro trains on Oct. 25
Barbara D. Livingston Unbeaten Bolt d'Oro will be a low-priced favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Bolt d’Oro, by Medaglia d’Oro

Last 3 Beyers: 100-85-77

* Has won all three of his starts, including a 7 3/4-length victory in the Grade 1 FrontRunner at Santa Anita for which owner-trainer Mick Ruis said the horse was only 90 percent fit.

* Two of his victories have come at Del Mar.

* Though he broke a step slowly in his first two starts, he was into the race from the outset in the FrontRunner.

* Breezed very well Sunday at Santa Anita.

Free Drop Billy, by Union Rags

Last 3 Beyers: 79-85-76

* Has two wins and two seconds from four starts.

* In the Grade 1 Hopeful, he was beaten a neck by Sporting Chance, who bore out and cut in front of Free Drop Billy in deep stretch.

* Came to Southern California early and got two workouts, including a solid six furlongs over Del Mar’s main track.

Firenze Fire, by Poseidon’s Warrior

Last 3 Beyers: 90-77-79

* Has won three of four starts, including the Grade 1 Champagne, where he sat well off the pace and finished strong under Irad Ortiz Jr.

* His lone loss was a fourth in the Grade 1 Hopeful. Trainer Jason Servis said Firenze Fire had been coughing the week leading up to the race.

* Servis said Wednesday that Firenze Fire had a temperature after shipping here from New York.

Good Magic, by Curlin

Beyers: 89-82

* Has finished second in both of his starts, including the Grade 1 Champagne behind Firenze Fire.

* Trainer Chad Brown has seen improvement from the colt since that race and is really high on his chances to be a factor in this race.

“His numbers are improving,” Brown said. “I feel like he’s a horse that’s going to run even better in his third start than he did in the second. And, if that happens, based on the numbers I’m looking at, that could put him right there.”
