Kentucky Derby: Vyjack follows script that worked for Big Brown

Trainer Rudy Rodriguez said having Vyjack blow out three furlongs is similar to what Big Brown did before he won the Kentucky Derby in 2008.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Vyjack blew out three furlongs in 37.13 seconds under his trainer Rudy Rodriguez on Thursday in his final preparation for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

“Just to sharpen him up a little bit. We don’t want to overdo it, but we want him to blow-out a little bit, open his lungs a little bit,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said that previous trainers for whom he worked – Richard Dutrow Sr., Richard Dutrow Jr,. and Bobby Frankel – often blew horses out close to a race. Dutrow Jr. blew out Big Brown three furlongs in 35.40 seconds two days before he won the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Dutrow also blew out Big Brown a quarter in 25.80 seconds the morning of the Preakness, which he won.

Speaking of Big Brown, he won the Derby from post 20, which is the same post from which Vyjack will break.

“We’re very, very excited about the 20,” Rodriguez said. “Most of the horses the last 10 years they all won from the outside. I think we’re in very, very good position. We got a good horse to be able to accommodate ourselves in a good position, plus we got a good jockey.

Vyjack, who won the Jerome and Gotham earlier this year at Aqueduct, will be ridden by Garrett Gomez. Vyjack was third in the Wood Memorial in his most recent start..

20 post is not a big deal. Can avoid all trouble. Lose ground of course but with Gomez you have one of the best. I really wasn't considering playing him but if it's a sloppy track he's my top pick.

GoGo 4-6 with Rudy horses but this BIGGEST TEST by far...wish Gomez had a spin on him though.

A lot of people dont realize that Vyjack has a virus while running The Wood........since then, he's trained like a monster and looks great.......he's definitely a threat.

What does this say (if anything) about his likely tactics from the outside post? I doubt Gomez guns the 1st turn to try to save a few wide lengths, but he should be mid-pack or better and fairly wide especially with this blow out. If the Track gets a little sloppy- every length he loses wide, should be cancelled out by having a clear kick-back free run. He handles any track. He also did a little dirty work in the deceptively-paced Wood. When Verrazano jumped into stride for the far turn and the otherwise slow paced race picked up, Vyjack briefly dueled with Verrazano. Wasn't his best performance but it was a decent prep.

Loved This Horse Till The Wood Which I Thought He Could Win But Didn't And The Jockey Change Is For The Worse. The Only Way This Horse Wins If Gomez Gives Him A White Line My Money Goes To Orb Normandy Invasion Revolutionary And Overanalyze While Verrazano Gets The Oxygen Mask At The Eighth Pole.
