LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The results of several key prep races in recent weeks has led to eight new names for the third and final pool in the 2011 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens its three-day run Friday at noon Eastern at tracks and wagering outlets throughout North America.

Among the new faces for Pool 3 are Premier Pegasus, the romping winner of the March 12 San Felipe, and Pants On Fire, winner of the Louisiana Derby last weekend. The others are Animal Kingdom, Decisive Moment, Mr. Commons, Nehro, Twice the Appeal, and Watch Me Go.

The displaced horses from Pool 2 are Archarcharch, Gourmet Dinner, J P’s Gusto, Machen, Rogue Romance, Runflatout, Sway Away, and Sweet Ducky.

Uncle Mo, the undefeated divisional champion, has been pegged as the 3-1 favorite on the morning line released Wednesday by Churchill Downs, which has offered parimutuel futures since 1999. The Factor is the second choice among the 23 individual betting interests at 6-1, followed by Premier Pegasus at 8-1, Dialed In at 10-1, Soldat at 10-1, and the mutuel field, the No. 24 or “all others” option, at 10-1.

Just one major prep, the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, will be run while Pool 3 is open – and fans wanting to factor in those results had better be ready to spring to action. Gulfstream officials said Wednesday that the Florida Derby will be run before Pool 3 closes at 6 p.m. Eastern – but not by much. As of Wednesday morning, post time was tentatively scheduled to be 5:42 p.m., according to one official.

The Florida Derby is expected to get a handful of Pool 3 horses, most notably Dialed In, Soldat, Stay Thirsty, and To Honor and Serve, and possibly Watch Me Go, who was made eligible to the Triple Crown prior to last Saturday's deadline for late nominations. Entries for the Florida Derby were to be drawn Thursday.

The field closed as the 2-1 favorite in Pool 1, which ran Feb. 18-20. In Pool 2, which ran March 11-13, Uncle Mo closed as the 3-1 favorite over the field (7-2). [Full closing odds of previous pools >>]

Decisive Moment, runner-up to Animal Kingdom last weekend in the Vinery Spiral at Turfway Park, is the only Pool 3 horse to have been listed separately in Pool 1 and then grouped into the field for Pool 2. In Pool 1, he was the longest shot at 186-1.

Only one Pool 3 horse, Elite Alex, was separately listed in Pool 2 after being a field horse in Pool 1.

Combined handle in the first two pools was $969,191. Records for a Pool 3 handle and aggregate handle, both set in 2005, are $533,973 and $1,665,990, respectively. The Pool 3 and aggregate handles last year were $310,154 and $1,132,055, respectively.

Win and exacta wagering are available at a $2 minimum, including $1 boxes and part-wheels. All results are predicated on the 137th Derby, to be run May 7 at Churchill.

Only one futures pool on the Kentucky Oaks was offered this year, concurrent with Pool 2. Kathmanblu closed as the 7-2 favorite.

All futures lineups are chosen by John Asher of Churchill and Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form.
