PEDIGREE ANALYSIS
by Dan Illman
Sire:
Fusaichi Pegasus, a $4,000,000 yearling by the great stallion Mr. Prospector, achieved racing immortality by grabbing the Kentucky Derby in 2000. A winner at distances ranging from 6 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles, Fusaichi Pegasus received a career-high 115 Beyer Speed Figure when taking the Grade 2 Jerome Handicap at a mile. At stud, Fusaichi Pegasus' top performers have done well at nine furlongs and above. Roman Ruler won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at 1 1/8 miles with a 108 Beyer while a fellow 3-year-old of 2005, Bandini, scored the Grade 1 Blue Grass at nine furlongs. Champ Pegasus, a long-winded turf runner, prevailed in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch at 1 1/4 miles and was able to successfully stretch out to 12 furlongs in this year's Grade 2 San Luis Obispo Stakes.
Dam:
Premier Pegasus is a half-brother to Street Hero, who won the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes over Pro-Ride at 1 1/16 miles. The dam, Squall Linda (by Preakness winner Summer Squall), earned all three of her lifetime wins at six furlongs on dirt and she finished third in the Grade 3 Monrovia Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs on turf. This is the female family of Trojan Bronze, who took the Grade 1 San Luis Rey at 1 1/2 miles on turf in 1975, and the influential stallion Turn-To.
Outlook:
The sire and broodmare sire combined for a pair of classic victories and Premier Pegasus relished his first start around two turns. Nine furlongs seems well within his range with the 1 1/4-mile distance of the Derby a strong possibility.
Best Bets
Daylon Miracle is perfect in four career starts. She even won in her career debut despite getting impeded and making a break. The 3-year-old filly has good speed off the gate and should be able to take charge in the City of London Fillies and Mares final. Seeing as she will be 3-5 or so, let’s key her in the exacta over #1 Cynthia Loo and #4 Amber Kadabra.
