Riding strong but never silent

Horsephotos
Shane Sellers, rider of The Cliff's Edge, believes in speaking his mind.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Shane Sellers is back to riding rainbows again. A catchy tune that Sellers sang in a country music career that briefly interrupted his two decades of riding racehorses now serves as a remarkably prescient metaphor for how his career has unfolded.

"Put a bridle on another dream and saddle up the wind," Sellers crooned on "Back to Riding Rainbows," the first track of an 11-song compact disc he recorded several years ago on the Nashville-based Lofton Creek label. "I'm back to riding rainbows again."

Big guys winless in biggest race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Put up a major race for older horses and chances are Bobby Frankel and Richard Mandella will be there. The two trainers have thrived with older runners throughout their careers, which began on opposite coasts and in differing circumstances but now parallel one another.

Clocker Report - Master David tops tab

Track: Fast
Weather: Sunny
Temp: 45

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As the day of reckoning draws closer, Derby workouts get scarcer, and only two candidates for Saturday's race got in some serious work on a cold and blustery Tuesday morning.

The nip in the air certainly had most of the Derby hopefuls on their toes and eager to perform, including the undefeated Smarty Jones, who had a spirited gallop. There was also plenty of unexpected excitement during training hours with three horses getting loose from their riders, causing a few anxious moments for one Derby candidate.

Pletcher has confidence in his pair

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After nominating a record 35 horses to this year's Triple Crown series, it is no surprise that trainer Todd Pletcher will run two horses in Saturday's Kentucky Derby. Some may be surprised that the two are Limehouse and Pollard's Vision.

Limehouse, a son of Grand Slam, was precocious enough to win his maiden in April of his 2-year-old season, and is 2 for 2 at Churchill Downs, including a Derby Day win in the Bashford Manor. He won his first two starts at 3, including the Tampa Bay Derby, before finishing third in the Blue Grass Stakes.

Getting down to the wire

The Cliff's Edge, with Maxine Correa in the saddle, hits the track at Churchill Downs to tune up for Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Several of the leading contenders for Saturday's 130th Kentucky Derby, including likely favorite The Cliff's Edge, remained sharp on Monday with key final workouts. But the intrigue for this Derby continues to extend beyond the track because more than the maximum of 20 runners desire to participate in the race.

Tapit's rider high on first Derby try

Tammy Faulkner/Tapeta Farms
Kentucky Derby-bound Tapit, and rider Ramon Dominguez, course the landscape at trainer Michael Dickinson's Tapeta Farm in North East, Md.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ramon Dominguez is trying to become the first jockey to win the Kentucky Derby with his first Derby mount since fellow Marylander Ronnie Franklin did it aboard Spectacular Bid in 1979.

After guiding Wood Memorial winner Tapit through his final Derby workout Monday at trainer Michael Dickinson's Tapeta Farm in North East, Md., Dominguez is feeling more confident he can pull it off.

Lion Heart gets in, works out, gets out

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lion Heart spent only a few hours at Churchill Downs on Monday, getting familiar with the surroundings and putting in a strong workout over the track. Trainer Patrick Biancone can only hope things go as well Saturday when he brings Lion Heart back for the 130th Kentucky Derby.

Those sitting on bubble can only wait

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jason Orman and Mark Hennig can empathize with Tom Petty. The waiting is the hardest part.

Orman, the trainer of Rock Hard Ten, and Hennig, who trains Eddington, are on the outside looking in at this year's Kentucky Derby. Each wants to run his colt in Saturday's 130th Derby at Churchill Downs, but both could be denied spots because of insufficient earnings in graded stakes races.

Clocker Report - Finally, sunny and fast

The Cliff's Edge works four furlongs in :47.51 on Monday morning at Churchill Downs.

Track: Fast
Weather: Sunny
Temp: 55

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - The sun finally shined bright over this old Kentucky home on Monday morning, a delightful and welcomed change following several days of rain. So too was the fast racetrack which greeted the five Kentucky Derby hopefuls who worked, a group that included likely Derby favorite THE CLIFF'S EDGE. As usual the majority of the action took place following the renovation break with only QUINTONS GOLD RUSH working early, very early, shortly after the track opened for business at 5:15 a.m.

Clocker Report - Rain a four-letter word

Horsephotos
Wimbledon works five furlongs in :59.70 seconds on Sunday morning at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Rain was a four-letter word around Churchill Downs during training hours on Sunday. Especially to the four trainers who had works scheduled for their Kentucky Derby hopefuls on an absolutely miserable morning.

Light rain that fell when the racetrack opened for training at 5:15 a.m. turned to torrential downpours an hour later and a sloppy/fast track became heavier and slower as the morning progressed up until the renovation break. The surface quickened a bit after being floated by the maintenance crew during the break.
