Derby betting declines for second year in row

Betting on Saturday's Kentucky Derby fell 3.2 percent, and handle on the entire Derby card fell 2.0 percent compared with last year, according to figures released by Churchill Downs. It was the second year in a row that handle fell compared to the year before, after 16 consecutive years of growth.

Total wagering on this year's Derby from all sources was $114,557,364, compared with $118,317,714 in 2007, according to Churchill. The high-water mark for the Derby was set in 2006, when total betting was $118,426,874 - a 13.5 percent increase over the figure for 2005.

Few horses to take on Big Brown in Preakness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The flight to Baltimore may be a lonely one for Big Brown in the wake of his dominating victory in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

As of Sunday morning, it appeared Big Brown would be the only member of the Derby field heading to Pimlico for the Preakness on May 17. Among the connections of horses who finished behind Big Brown in the Derby, only trainer Louie Roussel left the door open, saying he was leaning against bringing Recapturetheglory to the Preakness but that he wouldn’t make a decision until Monday.

Jones: 'She went out a champion'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - At a press conference two hours after his filly Eight Belles was euthanized on the racetrack after fracturing both front ankles following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, a choked up Larry Jones said: "She went out in a blaze of glory, she went out a champion. We're heartbroke. We're going to miss her."

Jones had won the Kentucky Oaks the previous afternoon with Proud Spell. He also trained Hard Spun, who finished second in the 2007 Derby.

Eight Belles can't be saved

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Triumph turned to tragedy for trainer Larry Jones on Saturday as the brilliant filly Eight Belles suffered a fatal injury after finishing second to Big Brown in the 134th Kentucky Derby.

Eight Belles, who was attempting to become just the fourth filly in history to win the Kentucky Derby while also attempting to give Jones a rare Kentucky Oaks-Derby double, suffered condylar fractures to both front ankles and had to be euthanized. Jones had won the Kentucky Oaks 24 hours earlier with Proud Spell.

Big Brown romps; Eight Belles euthanized

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Neither inexperience nor a wide trip could offset the talent of Big Brown in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

He won the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby in spectacular fashion, rallying from just off the pace and easily winning a race marred by the fatal breakdown of runner-up Eight Belles, who broke down galloping out after the race.

Denis of Cork rallied for third, while never close to the winner or runner-up. Tale of Ekati was fourth.

Chelokee prognosis guarded

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Chelokee will need "a major piece of surgery" to repair a dislocated right front ankle that he suffered during the running of Friday's Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs, Dr. Larry Bramlage of the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., said Saturday. But while his racing career is over, Chelokee could be saved to become a stallion, Bramlage said.
