Better to spend big or bargain hunt?

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - There are plenty of ways to get to the Kentucky Derby. Easiest is paying a small sum, walking through the tunnel and onto the infield, and planting yourself among the masses. If you want to pony up the dough, you might procure a fancy seat, maybe even an all-access Derby VIP pass. Or, go buy any old racehorse, get an owner's license, and see the Derby horses up close and personal on the Churchill Downs backstretch Derby Week.

Barbara D. Livingston
Dunkirk, under regular exercise rider Patty Barry, gets his first look at the Churchill Downs track on Wednesday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - All the important work is over, the post positions have been drawn, and now it's just a matter of keeping all 20 starters for this year's Kentucky Derby happy and healthy over the next 72 hours.

All the participants were on the grounds as of 2 a.m. Wednesday, with the arrival of Atomic Rain from Monmouth Park, and 19 of the 20 starters in this year's Derby field went to the racetrack during the course of the morning. The lone exception was I Want Revenge, who had worked four furlongs the previous day.

Mullins puts favorite in post 13

Barbara D. Livingston
I Want Revenge, who will be ridden by 19-year-old Joe Talamo, is the Derby's 3-1 morning-line favorite.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - This is the fifth time trainer Jeff Mullins has brought a horse to the Kentucky Derby, but the first time he will send out the favorite. From his rural roots in Murray, Utah, to first having success in Arizona, and then to the Southern California circuit, Mullins said he never could have imagined being in this position.

Win Willy out, Nowhere to Hide jumps in

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The defection of Win Willy on Wednesday morning from the Kentucky Derby opened a spot in the maximum 20-horse field, and it was quickly filled by Nowhere to Hide, whom trainer Nick Zito said would now be entered.

Zito, a two-time Kentucky Derby winner, said Shaun Bridgmohan would ride.

Win Willy, the Rebel Stakes winner, has the beginnings of a fracture in his left front pastern, trainer Mac Robertson said Wednesday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A range of emotions rolled through the Churchill Downs stable area on Tuesday morning for trainers associated with this year's Kentucky Derby, from a dejected Doug O'Neill, who announced Square Eddie was injured anew, to the quiet confidence of Jeff Mullins after I Want Revenge turned in his final workout, to the joy of trainer Kelly Breen, who through a surprising confluence of events looked like he would have a second runner in the race.

Take the Points out of Derby, Atomic Rain in

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Advice and Join in the Dance will join Dunkirk as starters in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Todd Pletcher, but Take the Points will not run, allowing Atomic Rain to get into the race.

Pletcher made his decision just before noon on Tuesday. He said Rene Douglas would ride Advice, and Join in the Dance would be ridden by Chris DeCarlo.

I Want Revenge beats the deluge

Barbara D. Livingston
I Want Revenge, with Joe Talamo up, gets in a five-furlong work just before heavy rain hit Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the weather forecast calling for heavy rain on Tuesday morning at Churchill Downs, trainer Jeff Mullins was rolling the dice just a bit delaying I Want Revenge's workout until after the renovation break at 8:30 a.m. And perhaps it was an omen of good things to come for I Want Revenge, the likely Derby favorite, that the wet weather held off long enough for him to complete his important drill just minutes before a deluge turned a fast track to slop for the remainder of Tuesday's training session.

I Want Revenge gets in his final work

LOUISVILLE, Ky. I Want Revenge, the likely favorite for the Kentucky Derby, worked a half-mile in 47.34 seconds at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning with jockey Joe Talamo in his final tune-up for Saturday's race.

"I feel we accomplished what we wanted to," said Talamo. "The last two times he worked the track was deep and soggy."

The track was fast for Tuesday's work, but I Want Revenge just did beat the rain. It began pouring just as he left the track, about 8:45 a.m.

Square Eddie will miss Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Square Eddie has re-aggravated a cannon bone injury and will not run in Saturday's 135th Kentucky Derby, trainer Doug O'Neill said early Tuesday morning.

"He's got heat in the shin," O'Neill said shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday. "We x-rayed it, and it looks good, but the heat is the first sign of some activity. He's going to be fine. He was hiccup-free until yesterday. That shin had been cold since early March. It's terrible timing."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The road to the Kentucky Derby is filled with potholes and dangerous curves, and on Monday, only five days before the 135th Derby at Churchill Downs, there were stark reminders, both here and at Belmont Park.
