Soldat targets Florida Derby after Fountain of Youth win

Barbara D. Livingston
Soldat, winner of the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, is being pointed to the Florida Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Soldat came out of his two-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth in good order and that he’s pointing him to the Transylvania at Keeneland. McLaughlin, of course, was joking about Soldat, who is headed to the Florida Derby.

Trainer Steve Standridge said Fountain of Youth runner-up Gourmet Dinner also came out of the race in excellent shape and that he’s leaning toward the Santa Anita Derby for his horse’s next start. Standridge wasn’t kidding.

No set plans for Crossbow after Hutcheson scratch

Barbara D. Livingston
Crossbow scratched out of Saturday's Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes after drawing post 1.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – While drawing post 1 in the 1 1/8-mile Fountain of Youth was perfect for his Soldat, drawing the rail with Crossbow in the seven-furlong Hutcheson was not what trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was looking for. As a result, McLaughlin opted to scratch Crossbow from the Hutcheson and wait for another day.

“The race shape was just wrong for him,” McLaughlin said. “He’s never been behind horses, and the way they ran the Hutcheson, with the pace as fast as it was, I was really glad he was back at the barn eating his afternoon dinner when the race was run.”

2011 Kentucky Derby: Under the Radar - Awesome Patriot

Benoit & Associates
Awesome Patriot is one of several Kentucky Derby hopefuls trained by Bob Baffert.

We’re on the road to the Kentucky Derby, and Bob Baffert, as usual, has several leading 3-year-old contenders preparing for a trip to Churchill Downs.

What else is new?

Baffert has won the Derby three times, the Preakness Stakes on five occasions, and his Point Given romped in the 2001 Belmont Stakes. For Baffert, this Triple Crown business is old hat, and he has it down pat.

Among the Baffert sophomores is Jaycito, winner of the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes. He will likely make his 3-year-old debut in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 12.

Bob Coglianese

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Soldat left little doubt he’s just as capable on a fast track as he is over slop or grass after leading from start to finish en route to a two-length victory over Gourmet Dinner in Saturday’s $400,000 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park.
