Mucho Macho Man (right) launches his winning move under Rajiv Maragh in the Risen Star.

NEW ORLEANS – Sometimes fast horses run better in longer races. Mucho Macho Man is a fast horse, no doubt. In his career debut he ran an opening quarter-mile in 21 seconds and change. But Mucho Macho Man, at this point, appears to be no sprinter. Stretched back out to two turns Saturday in the Grade 2, $300,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, Mucho Macho Man won for the second time in his career, beating Santiva by 1 1/2 lengths.

Nacho Business not a Fountain of Youth candidate

Kelly Breen said next Saturday's Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park will likely not be an option for Nacho Business despite his very impressive performance on graduation day and two subsequent 59-and-change five-furlong works at Palm Meadows.

“He’s only run once so he doesn’t have the experience the rest of them will have in the Fountain of Youth,” said Breen. “And even though it’s tempting we don’t want to rush a young horse like this that we really like so much.”

When Rogue Romance finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 6, a colt named Machen still was almost two months away from his career debut. Benoit & Associates
Jaycito raced with trainer Mike Mitchell as a 2-year-old, but has since been transferred to Bob Baffert’s barn.

J P’s Gusto and Jaycito were two of the most accomplished 2-year-olds of last year. Both won Grade 1 races, and both made it to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Yet when both make their 3-year-old debuts this year, and begin their quest to the May 7 Kentucky Derby, they will be doing so without the men who were closest to them last year.
