HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The Gulfstream Park stall office reported Saturday that Gourmet Dinner, runner-up in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes here on Feb. 26 and a possible candidate for the Grade 1 Florida Derby on April 3, shipped off the grounds early Friday evening with the destination on the transit slip listed as Ocala, Fla.
ARCADIA, Calif. – The Factor and Sway Away, who finished one-two in last month’s San Vicente Stakes, kept on similar itineraries Saturday morning here at Santa Anita when they turned in final workouts in preparation for scheduled starts in the Rebel Stakes for 3-year-olds next Saturday at Oaklawn Park.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.– Trainer Eddie Kenneally worked his Derby candidate Santiva an easy five furlongs in 1:02 at Palm Meadows on Saturday, then confirmed his intention to point the Grade 2 winner for the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland rather than the $1 million Louisiana Derby as originally planned.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A sizable bet on newcomer Runflatout made for a surprise early favorite and a skewed oddsboard during the opening hours of betting into Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future wager, which began its three-day run at noon Eastern on Friday.
As of 5 p.m., and with $24,592 in the win pool, Runflatout was the 5-2 favorite among the 24 betting interests, followed by To Honor and Serve (9-2), Uncle Mo (6-1), and the mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, at 10-1. An additional $5,498 had been bet into the exacta pool after the first five hours.
Rescind the Trade came out of his last-place finish in the Whirlaway Stakes with a foot problem, according to trainer Rick Violette, but the 3-year-old returned to the work tab earlier in the week. On Wednesday, Rescind the Trade breezed four furlongs in 49.88 seconds over Belmont’s training track.
Rescind the Trade won his first two starts in New York before shipping to south Florida, where he didn’t appear to acclimate well to the warmer weather. He returned to New York for the Whirlaway, where he set the pace before fading. He was beaten 10 3/4 lengths by Toby’s Corner.
Preachintothedevil, another New York-bred 3-year-old, has seemingly recovered from a foot bruise that forced him to scratch out of the Grade 3 Gotham on March 5 and is now being considered for the Grade 3, $500,000 Vinery Racing Spiral on March 26 at Turfway Park, trainer Gary Contessa said.
“I want to continue on the Triple Crown trail with him, it makes a lot of sense,’’ Contessa said about the Spiral. “He’s got interesting action for the Polytrack; it’s an interesting spot to go to and it’s a lot of money.’’
Trainer Juan Arias has informed racing officials at Turfway Park that he intends to ship Decisive Moment from south Florida for the Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes on March 26.
Decisive Moment is part of a growing roster of 3-year-olds under consideration for the 40th running of the Grade 3 Vinery Spiral, the annual showcase race at Turfway in Florence, Ky. A two-back winner of the ungraded Jean Lafitte at Delta Downs, Decisive Moment most recently was fifth in the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds.
The explosive March 5 debut by Wilburn ranks as one of the meet’s best by a 3-year-old – 1:13.95 was the second-fastest time of the meet for 6 1/2 furlongs; he earned a 91 Beyer. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the Bernardini colt arrived too late for the Derby, but is one to follow as the season unfolds.

The Tampa Bay Derby has produced short-term pain but long-term gain for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Since 2000, Pletcher has run eight horses in the Tampa Bay Derby, winning it in 2004 with Limehouse while running second six times and third once. His last four runners have been defeated by a neck, neck, neck, and nose.
