Kentucky Derby: Animal Kingdom outfinishes Nehro

Barbara D. Livingston
Animal Kingdom and John Velazquez win the Kentucky Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The twists and turns of racing were never more evident than in Saturday's 137th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, when trainer Graham Motion, who seemingly lost his best chance for a Derby win earlier in the week when Toby's Corner was withdrawn, and jockey John Velazquez, who seemingly was to sit this one out when Uncle Mo was scratched on Friday, combined forces to win with the 20-1 shot Animal Kingdom, who was making his first start on dirt.

Woodford Reserve: Get Stormy wires field at Churchill Downs

Barbara D. Livingston
Get Stormy leads the field home in the Woodford Reserve.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Capitalizing on a dawdling early pace, Get Stormy led throughout to win Saturday’s Grade 1, $576,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic in the race before the Kentucky Derby.

The race was all but won Friday morning, however, when the speedy Little Mike was scratched from the Woodford, leaving Get Stormy as the lone front-runner in the 13-horse field.

Churchill Downs: Aikenite nails Apriority

Audrey C. Crosby
John Velazquez gets Aikenite up in the final jump on Saturday in the Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - When they met in March at Gulfstream, Apriority trounced Aikenite, presumably putting him higher in the pecking order in the sprint division. When they met on Saturday, in the Grade 2, $300,000 Churchill Downs Stakes, Aikenite showed that he has indeed caught up.

Churchill Distaff Turf Mile: Aviate flies down stretch

Tom Keyser
Aviate, Kent Desormeaux aboard, takes the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Aviate finished full of run down the center of the course to hand Aruna her first U.S defeat in Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile.

Aviate led a one-two-three finish in the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile by fillies who began their careers in Europe. The result of the race and comments by the winning connections suggest the turf course was on the softer side rather than firm as it was officially designated prior to the race.
