Santa Anita: Baffert has busy weekends ahead as Kentucky Derby nears

Flashback, the runner-up in the San Felipe Stakes, will have Garrett Gomez aboard in the Santa Anita Derby after three starts under Julien Leparoux.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bob Baffert is going to be in action in Derby preps every weekend from now until the Kentucky Derby on May 4, and though last weekend did not pan out as planned, with Den’s Legacy and Super Ninety Nine both losing in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn, Baffert was looking forward Monday at Santa Anita, where he worked Flashback, Code West, Power Broker, and Sunland Derby prospects Govenor Charlie and Shakin It Up on a cool, overcast morning.

Aqueduct: West Hills Giant pointed for Wood after toothache

West Hills Giant might have been bothered by a toothache during his second-place finish in the Gotham Stakes on March 2.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer John Terranova’s initial thought when seeing West Hills Giant start to lug in during the stretch run of the Gotham Stakes was to chalk it up to immaturity.

There might have been more to it.

Terranova said Monday that West Hills Giant may have been bothered by a cracked cap, the term given to a horse’s baby tooth that is being pushed up by the permanent tooth.

War Academy is headed to a major Kentucky Derby prep race following an authoritative entry-level, optional-claiming victory at Santa Anita on March 15.

Trained by Bob Baffert, War Academy raced around two turns for the first time and handled the additional distance without any fuss. Breaking from post 4 in the five-horse event at 1 1/16 miles, War Academy tracked the early leader, uncoupled stablemate Manando, through fractions of 24.41 and 48.64 seconds.

Arkansas Derby more likely for Den's Legacy; Super Ninety Nine probable for Santa Anita Derby

Super Ninety Nine figures to be a heavy favorite in the Grade 2 Rebel despite having drawn post 11.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Den’s Legacy, who finished third in the Rebel Stakes on Saturday, could return to Oaklawn Park next month for the Arkansas Derby, while Super Ninety Nine, who finished fifth as the 6-5 favorite, likely will head to the Santa Anita Derby, their trainer Bob Baffert, said Monday morning at Santa Anita.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Will Take Charge and Oxbow were separated by inches Saturday in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel at Oaklawn, but the horses are now expected to go in different directions for their final Kentucky Derby preps. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said on Sunday that Will Take Charge is being considered for the Blue Grass, while Oxbow could go in the Arkansas Derby.

Aqueduct: Falling Sky to make next start in Arkansas Derby

Falling Sky, the third-place finisher in the Tampa Bay Derby, is being pointed to the Arkansas Derby.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer John Terranova said Saturday that Falling Sky, the winner of the Sam Davis Stakes and the third-place finisher in the Tampa Bay Derby, would make his next start in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn on April 13.

Terranova said he was pleased with Falling Sky’s performance in the Tampa Bay Derby but was a little disappointed he couldn’t finish second to Verrazano.

Sunland Derby expected to attract full field of 12

After winning the seven-furlong San Vicente under jockey David Flores, Shakin It Up will likely be asked to try two turns in his next start.

Shakin It Up and Titletown Five are among the early probables for the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Derby on Sunday. The field for the 1 1/8-mile race was starting to take shape Saturday, with entries to be drawn Wednesday.

“The Sunland Derby looks to be a full field,” said Dustin Dix, director of racing operations for Sunland.

Gulfstream Park: Frac Daddy targets Grade 1 Florida Derby

Frac Daddy likely will run in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 30 if his throat ulcer has healed sufficiently.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The field for the $1 million Florida Derby is starting to grow.

On Saturday, trainer Ken McPeek added Frac Daddy’s name to the short list of 3-year-olds pointing for the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 30. He announced the decision after watching Frac Daddy work five furlongs in 1:00.82 in company with his 3-year-old filly stablemate Pure Fun, a Grade 1 winner.

Aqueduct: Elnaawi works for Wood Memorial

West Hills Giant will run next in either the Wood Memorial or the Blue Grass Stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Elnaawi, the third-place finisher in the Gotham on March 2, began working toward a start in the $1 million Wood Memorial on April 6 by breezing an easy half-mile in 50.01 seconds Saturday morning over the Belmont Park training track.

Elnaawi, a half-brother to Grade 1 winner To Honor and Serve, breezed in company with Navy Guard, a 3-year-old maiden who is a half-brother to 2008 juvenile champion Midshipman. Elnaawi worked in blinkers, equipment he has worn in all three of his starts.
