Jay Hovdey: Some Derby hopefuls can only dream

Barbara D. Livingston
Shanghai Bobby was taken off the Kentucky Derby trail in April after he was found to have a pelvic stress fracture.

Life goes on. At least, that’s the rumor. But for as many fairy tales that could have come true during this year’s Kentucky Derby saga, just as many ended way too soon for the people closest to the 3-year-olds who fell by the wayside on the long haul to Churchill Downs.

Kentucky Derby: Phipps family aims for first win with Orb

Barbara D. Livingston
Dinny Phipps, 72, shown at Saratoga in 2012, and his family have been leading Thoroughbred owners for more than 80 years but have yet to win a Kentucky Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Phipps family has enjoyed so much success in Thoroughbred racing that it wouldn’t be right to lament the ones who got away.

Yes, Gladys Mills Phipps – the grandmother of Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps – owned Seabiscuit before he became a cult hero. And yes, there was that infamous coin flip that went the wrong way, leaving the Phipps family with a filly named The Bride and Penny Chenery with the beast who became Secretariat.

Kentucky Derby: Orb has McGaughey at brink of crowning achievement

Barbara D. Livingston
Orb, shown training at Churchill Downs Thursday, could give trainer Shug McGaughey a Kentucky Derby victory to go along with his nine Breeders' Cup wins and Hall of Fame honors.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When trainer Shug McGaughey left New York late last year for his winter base in Florida, Orb owned only a maiden win, and McGaughey figured Orb would likely return to New York in the spring with, perhaps, having added an allowance win to his resume.

“At the beginning of the year, I had no idea I’d be standing here, none whatsoever,” McGaughey said.

Based on their past performances: Itsmyluckyday and Vyjack, stakes winners over such surfaces, and Palace Malice, who finished second in a fast allowance race over a sloppy surface.
