Gulfstream Park: Wildcat Red leaves no doubt in Hutcheson

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Jose Garoffalo was forced to skip the Holy Bull Stakes last week with his star 3-year-old Wildcat Red. So he went to Plan B, Saturday’s $200,000 Hutcheson Stakes, and was rewarded when Wildcat Red drew off to a convincing 4 3/4-length victory over C. Zee in the Grade 3 dash for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park.

Aqueduct: Samraat outduels Uncle Sigh in Withers

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - As impressive as Samraat had been in his first three starts, trainer Rick Violette said his horse needed to be tested before he could consider him a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender.

From the opening bell of Saturday’s Grade 3, $250,000 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct, Samraat was indeed tested, and he survived a 1 1/16-mile-long duel with Uncle Sigh to win the Withers by one length and remain undefeated from four career starts.

Gulfstream Park: Casiguapo plays catch-up in bid to earn Fountain of Youth berth

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Casiguapo has been out of sight and out of mind since finishing second behind Rise Up in the Grade 3 Delta Jackpot Stakes on Nov. 23. But the runner-up in the 2013 Hopeful is ready to launch his 3-year-old campaign and will try to earn himself a spot back on the Kentucky Derby trail when he takes on eight rivals at Gulfstream Park in Sunday’s first-level optional $75,000 claiming feature at six furlongs.

Santa Anita: Hoppertunity joins Baffert's prospect list

Hoppertunity wins a one-mile maiden race at Santa Anita on Thursday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - After finishing fifth sprinting in his debut, Hoppertunity successfully stretched out and defeated maidens in his second start Thursday when going a mile, becoming the latest in a long line of promising 3-year-olds based here with trainer Bob Baffert.

“He looks like a big, two-turn horse,” Baffert said after the race. “He was just kicking it in gear at the end there.”

Baffert said Hoppertunity “sat back and came running” when going seven furlongs in his debut. Baffert won the race with Bayern, who also was making his debut.

Santa Anita: Shared Belief's injured foot coming along

Shared Belief earned a 106 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the CashCall Futurity.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, continues to recover from a grabbed quarter suffered in early January, but is not being pointed to a specific race, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Friday.

Hollendorfer said he does not have a timetable for Shared Belief’s next workout. Shared Belief has been walking at the barn.

“We’re taking our time until that is as solid and healed as it can be,” Hollendorfer said of Shared Belief’s troubled foot.
