We Miss Artie earned an 85 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the Spiral Stakes.

FLORENCE, Ky. – We Miss Artie is scheduled to be flown back to south Florida on Tuesday and will not race again before the May 3 Kentucky Derby, for which the colt earned 50 eligibility points by virtue of his dramatic narrow victory Saturday in the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.

Owner Ken Ramsey said Sunday morning from Florida that he will let trainer Todd Pletcher decide when to send We Miss Artie back to Kentucky from the Palm Meadows training center to make final preparations for the Derby.

We Miss Artie (11), under John Velazquez finishes fast on the outside to get up just before the wire in the Spiral Stakes.

FLORENCE, Ky. – Ken Ramsey wasn’t on hand to see We Miss Artie take a very narrow victory Saturday in the 43rd running of the Grade 3, $518,950 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park. But you could almost hear him cackling from Florida.

Picking up where they left off last year, Ramsey and his wife, Sarah, once again were the winners of a major stakes in Kentucky when We Miss Artie, ridden by John Velazquez, was up in the final stride to nip Harry’s Holiday in the 43rd running of the annual Turfway showcase. Coastline was just another head back in a thrilling three-horse photo.

Aqueduct: In Trouble may run in Louisiana Derby rather than Wood

Barbara D. Livingston
In Trouble works five furlongs in 1:00.25 Saturday at Palm Meadows.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though trainer Tony Dutrow was initially planning to bring Gotham Stakes third-place finisher In Trouble back to New York for the Wood Memorial on April 5, he is now giving serious consideration to running him in next Saturday’s Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.

Both races are run at 1 1/8 miles, worth $1 million, and offer the same amount of qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby (100-40-20-10) to the first four finishers. The only difference is the Wood is a Grade 1, the Louisiana Derby a Grade 2.

Sunland Park: Midnight Hawk, Chitu give Baffert hot hand in rich Sunland Derby

Shigeki Kikkawa
Midnight Hawk is one of two strong contenders for trainer Bob Baffert in Sunday's $800,000 Sunland Derby.

The Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby has carved out a legitimate spot on the Triple Crown trail since its purse was boosted significantly in 2003. The field for Sunday’s renewal drives that point home, as four of the nine runners set to start hail from two of the biggest names in racing, trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher.

Jay Hovdey: Sunland Derby has become enchanting

Blame it on the Bird.

No single player is bigger than the game, or at least that’s what we are taught in school. But history has its way of producing exceptions to every rule.

Ayrton Senna was the greatest Formula 1 driver of the 1990s, but he pushed the envelope and drove with an aggressive abandon that antagonized his competitors and tested the safety limits of the sport. His death in May 1994 in a crash during the San Marino Grand Prix inspired changes to the cars and new emergency protocols. No Formula 1 driver has died in a race since then.
