OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Samraat and Uncle Sigh, the one-two finishers in both the Grade 3 Withers and Grade 3 Gotham, remain in lockstep, at least as far as their preparation for the $1 million Wood Memorial on April 5 is concerned, as both 3-year-olds returned to the work tab Saturday.

At Belmont Park, Uncle Sigh worked five furlongs in 1:01.79 over the training track, getting his last quarter-mile in 24.01 seconds while under minimal encouragement from exercise rider Nick Santagata. Uncle Sigh galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.08.

Shared Belief jogging, but will miss Triple Crown series

Shared Belief, the unbeaten 2-year-old champion of 2013, is in light training at Golden Gate Fields, but there is no timetable for his return to racing.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, is in light training at Golden Gate Fields following a layoff from an injured foot earlier this year, but will not be ready for the Triple Crown, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said on Thursday.

Since early January, Hollendorfer and his team have been treating Shared Belief for a quarter crack that prevented racetrack training for several weeks. Hollendorfer moved Shared Belief from Santa Anita to Golden Gate Fields in early February to allow the gelding to be trained on the Tapeta synthetic track.

Santa Anita: Undefeated Bayern resumes exercise

Shigeki Kikkawa
Bayern won an allowance race by 15 lengths on Feb. 13 at Santa Anita.

Bayern, the unbeaten 3-year-old scratched from the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 8, has resumed racetrack exercise, trainer Bob Baffert said.

Baffert said Bayern was sent to the track Wednesday. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Bayern beat maidens by 3 1/4 lengths in a race over seven furlongs in his debut Jan. 4 and won a one-mile allowance race by 15 lengths Feb. 13.

Baffert said Bayern will be considered for two $1 million races in early April – the Santa Anita Derby on April 5 or the Arkansas Derby on April 12.

Byron King: Hoppertunity poised for improvement in Rebel

Shigeki Kikkawa
Hoppertunity impressive maiden victory at Santa Anita put him on the Kentucky Derby radar of at least one handicapper.

When Hoppertunity won a maiden race at Santa Anita on Jan. 30, shooting up the inside to victory and galloping out many lengths in front, he hit my shortlist of horses to follow who could vault into the Kentucky Derby picture with continued improvement. And although Hoppertunity followed that win with a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes, he is still one this handicapper is following closely.

Tapiture had a perfect trip while winning the Southwest Stakes (above).

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.– Last month’s Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park was a tale of two trips. Tapiture, the winner, had a remarkably perfect one from his rail post, while runner-up Strong Mandate’s became more challenging with each passing furlong. The pair meet again Saturday in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel.

The Rebel field will be smaller, with eight horses set to start as opposed to 12 in the Southwest. There also are notable new players: Grade 2 San Vicente winner Kobe’s Back, Bob Baffert trainee Hoppertunity, and the Street Sense colt Street Strategy, with Calvin Borel aboard.

Ride on Curlin (left) is trained by Billy Gowan, who learnd his craft as an assistant with Jack Van Berg.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – If trainer Billy Gowan needs any Hall of Fame advice with Ride On Curlin, who runs Saturday in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, he just needs to walk a few paces up his shed row to the stable of Jack Van Berg.

“It’s great to be able to pick his brain,” Gowan said.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Jose Garoffalo said Wildcat Red will work for the first time since capturing the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes almost three weeks earlier either Friday or Saturday morning, depending upon the weather.

“Right now, the plan is still to take him to the Florida Derby,” Garoffalo said. “He’s doing well, he doesn’t need too much. He’ll just gallop strong and have a couple of easy works before his next start.”
