Dallas Stewart went into last month’s Louisiana Derby knowing that a one-two finish with his runner Commanding Curve would put him in the field for the 140th Kentucky Derby.
With Cairo Prince out of the 140th Kentucky Derby with an injury and Midnight Hawk removed from consideration following his second-place finish in the Illinois Derby on Saturday, spots opened in the prospective field for Vinceremos and Harry’s Holiday, and more scoreboard watching will be done as horses begin to arrive at Churchill Downs for their final works for the May 3 Derby.
A trio of prospects worked Monday, and their status will affect the final lineup for the Derby, for which entries will be drawn April 30. A maximum of 20 horses can run, with up to four also-eligibles.
STICKNEY, Ill. – Dynamic Impact and Midnight Hawk, separated by a nose at the finish in Saturday’s Illinois Derby, both emerged from the race in good order, their trainers said Sunday morning. It’s extremely unlikely either horse would run in the Kentucky Derby, and while Dynamic Impact is a possible runner in the Preakness Stakes, Midnight Hawk will be switched to shorter one-turn races for a late spring and summer campaign.
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Todd Pletcher completed his final piece of important business in south Florida for the season when sending out two of his four potential Kentucky Derby starters, We Miss Artie and Intense Holiday, to work at his winter home, the Palm Meadows training center, Sunday morning.
Grade 2, $200,000 Lexington Stakes, 1 1/16 mi. Polytrack, , April 19 2014.
10 Derby qualifying points for a win, 4 for second, 2 for third, 11 for fourth.
With no horse in this field likely to benefit enough by the 10 Derby qualifying points to the winner, this race had no bearing on the top 20 attempting to make the Kentucky Derby starting field.
That said, it was an important race for Mr Speaker, who had shown speed only to fade in the Holy Bull Stakes on the Gulfstream dirt track early in the year.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - For the second consecutive morning, trainer Jose Garoffalo was forced to postpone a scheduled work at Gulfstream Park for his Kentucky Derby hopeful Wildcat Red on Saturday due to heavy rains in south Florida.
More than two inches of rain has fallen at Gulfstream over the last two days, with the second deluge striking during the early morning on Saturday. The main track was sloppy and sealed and the dogs were out throughout the four-hour training session.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin fretted for two weeks whether Cairo Prince would have enough points to make it into the Kentucky Derby field. One week after learning that Cairo Prince would indeed make it, McLaughlin had to withdraw the horse from consideration for the 140th Derby due to an injury to his left front ankle.
"This is the toughest day in my career as a trainer to have to make this announcement," McLaughlin said by phone Saturday from south Florida.
"All the owners are understanding; hopefully the horse is fine."
Vicar’s in Trouble was out for serious work Saturday when he breezed five furlongs in 1:00.40 over a fast track at the Trackside training center in Louisville, Ky.
Working in company with a horse who has been racing in starter-allowance company, Vicar’s in Trouble was timed going out six furlongs in 1:15.60 by clocker Richard McCreery. It was the second work for the Into Mischief colt since he returned to Kentucky following his 3 1/2-length victory in the March 29 Louisiana Derby.
