Woodbine: Wando's back

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Wando ($4.20) overhauled I'm the Tiger in the final strides to take the $135,875 Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine Saturday.

Wando and I'm the Tiger both stalked the pace in the six-furlong dash, as Soitenly set fractions of 22.69 seconds and 45.94 while being pressed by Mazengah. I'm the Tiger took control at the head of the stretch, and yielded grudgingly to Wando, who prevailed by a neck in 1:10.67. El Ruller finished another three lengths back in third in the seven-horse field of 3-year-olds.

Injury bug hits local jockey colony

OLDSMAR, Fla. - In the past week several jockeys have been injured and a few more have left, or are planning to leave, to ride at other tracks.

Joe Judice, who came into Saturday's program with a one-race lead over Jesus Castanon at the top of the rider standings, has had some swelling in his hand after one of his mounts attempted to vault the temporary inner rail on the turf course and unseated him last week. He took off on Tuesday, but was back in action Saturday.

Benoit & Associates
Champion Lodge has proved a bargain purchase for Ron Charles and Shig Katayama.

ARCADIA, Calif. - At the Dec. 26 start of the long Santa Anita winter meet, trainer Sandy Shulman hoped European import Champion Lodge would develop into a useful allowance horse. Skip Away choice comes in off clunker

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - In 28 career starts, Best of the Rest has rarely given a performance that had his trainer, Eddie Plesa Jr., searching for reasons to toss out the race. Lacie Girl makes her turf debut

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Sunday's $60,000-added Woodside Handicap at Bay Meadows could be a handicapper's dream or nightmare.

A mixed bag of nine fillies and mares will compete in the five-furlong turf feature.

The field includes a pair of comebackers: defending champion Fancee Bargain, who won this race last year when it was six furlongs on the main track and will be making her first start since Nov. 2, and Ragin T Rex, who has not started since running second in the Torrey Pines Handicap at Del Mar last Sept. 8.
