Saint Verre wins off-the-turf Fort Marcy

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Saint Verre motored through the muck to win Saturday's $117,500 Fort Marcy Handicap at Aqueduct by 8 1/2 lengths over Windsor Castle.

The Fort Marcy, originally scheduled for the turf at 1 1/16 miles, was moved to the sloppy main track at a mile because of rain. Nine horses were scratched, leaving a field of eight.

The Fort Marcy's Grade 3 status was removed because of the surface switch and will be reviewed by the Graded Stakes Committee. The last time the Fort Marcy was run on the main track was in 1998, when Subordination won.

Traveling Playmera needs trip

STICKNEY, Ill. - Playmera has racked up plenty of frequent-vanner miles during the last year, showing up at five different racetracks to make her last 10 starts. That's plenty of trips for a low-level allowance and starter allowance horse, but the trip Playmera really needs to avoid is a wide one on Monday at Hawthorne.

Playmera drew post 11 in the featured seventh race, which is for second-level filly and mare allowance sprinters. But if jockey Nick Meza can find a way to save ground, the prolific Playmera - with 13 career wins to her credit - can notch another victory.

Stormy Frolic a happy splasher in victory

Stormy Frolic was entered in Saturday's $150,000 Calder Breeders' Cup Handicap on the hope the race would come off the grass. After heavy rain forced management to move the Calder Breeders' Cup to the main track, Stormy Frolic made the most of her opportunity, sloshing to an easy 6 3/4-length victory over Win's Fair Lady and six other older fillies and mares.

"I was doing a rain dance all night," said Milt Wolfson, who trains Stormy Frolic for the Stride Rite Racing Stable. "She loves an off track."
