Evangeline: Smith rides five winners

LAFAYETTE, La. - Riding doubles and triples were common last week, but Guy Smith upstaged everyone else with a five-bagger Saturday night. Smith's feat vaulted him to the front of what has become a hotly contested race for top jockey in a meeting that is barely a month old.

Smith's big night did not start well, as his mount in the first race, 2-1 second choice Miss Top Believe, stopped badly after contesting the early pace and failed to finish.

After coming up a neck short in the second race with Global Outlaw, Smith reeled off four wins in a row.

Indiana Downs: Shelby County

Amanda's Crown tops a field of seven Indiana-bred fillies and mares entered in Friday night's $35,000 six-furlong Shelby County Stakes at Indiana Downs.

Amanda's Crown, a 4-year-old daughter of Crown Ambassador, has won stakes against statebred foes in each of the past two years, winning the Indiana Stallion Stakes at Hoosier Park as a 2-year-old and the Vincennes last year at the same track.

Aussie-born Bourke is all-Ohio now

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - It looks as if owner-breeder-trainer W. John Bourke has come up with another talented Ohio-bred. Last Friday, he sent out the 3-year-old filly Golden Tour for the first time and she tip-toed to an easy 7 1/2-length win in open company. She was ridden by the dean of the Thistledown riding colony, 57-year-old Tommy Meyers.

Brishane sharp for Gold Rush Derby

The Thoroughbred Brishane, winner of the Catalina Derby, meets the Quarter Horse Heros Call, the fastest qualifier, in the Grade 3, $72,400 Gold Rush Derby at 870 yards at Los Alamitos Friday night.

Owned and trained by Blane Schvaneveldt, Brishane has raced exclusively in Quarter Horse competition, with four starts, three wins and a second-place finish - all in 870-yard races. His only setback was a nose loss to Ahme Gone in an allowance race.

Will the old Private Son show up?

CHICAGO - Private Son's Grade 3 stakes form in 2002 would beat the 11 rivals entered against him Friday in the $40,000 Overage Stakes at Hawthorne, but placings of seventh, ninth, and seventh in his last three starts have cast a shadow of doubt over Private Son.

Maybe Private Son has mixed bad luck and "B" races in two disappointing efforts to start his season, but Private Son, a 5-year-old who has had injury problems in the past, has something to prove in the Overage, which is scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Bien Nicole goes back to best surface

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Bien Nicole, who won four consecutive stakes on turf last year but has raced on dirt in both of her starts this year, returns to turf in Friday's seventh race at Lone Star Park.

The one-mile allowance drew seven fillies and mares, including Cherylville Slew, winner of the $75,000 Irving Distaff. The $42,500 race will serve as the final local prep for the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff at Lone Star on May 26.

Thunder Zoot tough at a mile

AUBURN, Wash. - Thunder Zoot will attempt to transfer his sharp Portland Meadows form to Emerald Downs, something few have been able to manage this meeting, when he takes on six other $8,000 to $7,000 claimers in Thursday's one-mile feature.

The feature will go as the sixth of just seven live races on Thursday's card, the result of a shortage of fit and ready horses among the nearly 1,400 head on the grounds.

Rare turf start for Bonapaw

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Bonapaw, second in the Grade 3 Texas Mile Saturday, won his only start on turf, back in February 1999. He will return to that surface for his next start, which will come June 15 in the $150,000 Sea O'Erin Breeders' Cup at Arlington Park.

The race will be run at a mile, the same distance at which Bonapaw won a turf allowance as a 3-year-old at Fair Grounds.

Last summer, Bonapaw won two of three starts at Arlington, but on dirt. He won the Grade 3, $100,000 Hanshin at a mile in July and the $100,000 Arlington Sprint Handicap in August.

New York Hero in Withers

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - New York Hero, who jumped into the Kentucky Derby picture by winning the Grade 2 Lane's End at Turfway Park in March, will run on Derby Day, but not in Louisville.

New York Hero is among the expected starters for Saturday's $150,000 Withers at Aqueduct. A top effort from New York Hero in the one-mile Withers, a Grade 3 stakes, would likely lead to the colt running in the Preakness at Pimlico on May 17.
