Thompson gets over it

ALTOONA, Iowa - Jockey Terry Thompson remained upbeat this week despite being denied the opportunity to ride in the Kentucky Derby for the first time when his mount, Sir Cherokee, was scratched after suffering a fracture in his right hind ankle three days before the race.

"If it had to happen, I'm glad it happened this way," said Thompson about the discovery of the injury following Sir Cherokee's gallop the Thursday before the Derby. "He should make a full recovery. Who knows if they hadn't found it when they did? He may have broken down during the race."

Jerkens barn primed to keep the party going

ELMONT, N.Y. - Allen Jerkens may be the hottest trainer this side of Bobby Frankel.

After beginning the Aqueduct spring meet 1 for 11, Jerkens won with 14 of his last 30 starters to finish as the meet's leading trainer. He also won two of the last four stakes run at Aqueduct, with Saint Verre (the Fort Marcy) and Spite the Devil (the Withers).

Racing has switched to Belmont Park this week, but Jerkens hopes the change of venue won't change his luck when he sends out House Party and Shine Again in a pair of weekend stakes.

Pattern fits Bronze Autumn

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bronze Autumn has done her best work in seven-furlong races following an extended layoff. Trainer Todd Pletcher would like to see that trend continue Thursday when Bronze Autumn makes her 4-year-old debut in a third-level allowance race at Belmont Park.

Bronze Autumn, a daughter of Mr. Greeley, went terribly off-form last fall, finishing eighth in the Pennsylvania Oaks at Philadelphia Park in September and last of five in the off-the-turf Pebbles Handicap in the Belmont mud in October.
