Gallorette: Carib Lady upsets

BALTIMORE - No one would have blamed jockey Pat Valenzuela had he opted not to come to Pimlico after being bounced off his Preakness mount, Ten Cents a Shine, on Wednesday morning by owner Ken Ramsey and trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Valenzuela did make the cross-country trip from his California base and made the best of a bad situation Saturday by guiding Carib Lady to an upset victory in the Grade 3, $125,000 Gallorette Handicap for fillies and mares on turf.

William D. Schaefer: 'Windsor' rules

Windsor Castle drew off while wide in the stretch to win the Grade 3 William Donald Schaefer Handicap at 1 1/8 miles as the 117-pound highweight.

Ridden by Jose Santos, Windsor Castle bided his time while Roger E, Tempest Fugit, and Changeintheweather battled on the front end. Santos moved him quickly past the front-runners by the top of the stretch, and Windsor Castle went on to win by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:50.08 over the good track.

Hirsch Jacobs: Mt. Carson rallies

Mt. Carson rallied four wide in the stretch to win the six-furlong $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Mt. Carson won the Hirsch Jacobs by 2 1/4 lengths and was timed in 1:10.85. Gators N Bears, who briefly took the lead after coming up the rail in the stretch, finished second, and Only the Best finished third. Get Smarter, the 2-1 favorite, was sixth.

Love Sam, who ended up last, set a fast pace, going the first quarter in 22.96 seconds and the half in 45.82.

Mt. Carson paid $9 as the second choice in the eight-horse race.

Woodlawn: Gang by a nose

Last and wide turning for home, Gang closed with a furious rally under Anthony Mawing to edge Sigint by a nose and win the $125,000 Woodlawn Stakes for 3-year-olds. It was another four lengths back to Breanna's Smile in third.

Christmas Away, the even-money choice, finished fourth, followed by Hot Hand. Because of heavy rain on Friday, the Woodlawn, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on turf, was moved to the dirt at the same distance. There were seven scratches, reducing the field to five.

Maryland BC: Gill entry dominates

The streaking Pioneer Boy, part of a 3-5 three-horse entry from Michael Gill, took an early lead and hardly looked back, winning the six-furlong Grade 3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap in the first stakes race on the Preakness undercard.

Wild Spirit steals Shuvee spotlight

ELMONT, N.Y. - It wasn't a surprise that a Bobby Frankel-trained filly won Saturday's $200,000 at Belmont Park. The bettors just didn't expect it to be Wild Spirit, a 3 1/2-length winner over Smok'n Frolic.

Wild Spirit, who was 10-1 in her United States debut, ran as an uncoupled entry with stablemate You, the 7-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Shuvee. You, the 120-pound highweight, finished third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Smok'n Frolic. Princess Dixie, Nonsuch Bay, and Raging Fever completed the order of finish in the one-mile Shuvee.

Churchill: Golden Marlin scores

Golden Marlin ($9.60) wins the Grade 3 Dogwood by one length at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eight weeks of frustration gave way to elation Saturday when Golden Marlin turned back a pair of challengers to capture the $109,000 at Churchill Downs.

Under Shane Sellers, Golden Marlin outran Wildcat Queen then Double Scoop in winning the Grade 3 Dogwood by one length. She returned $9.60 to win after completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.96 over a sloppy track.

Double Scoop, the slight 2-1 favorite, finished second, while late-running Throne, a 32-1 shot, finished third in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies.

Hollywood: Worthwhile investment

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Makeup Artist had to be supplemented for $5,000 to Saturday's $113,500 Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park. It turned out to be money well spent by owner George Krikorian, who watched Makeup Artist win her first stakes race.

In the Grade 3 Senorita for 3-year-old fillies, Makeup Artist ($4) rallied from sixth to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Rutters Renegade, who closed from last in the field of seven.

Lone Star: Coastalota in time

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Coastalota ran down the leaders in the final furlong to win the $50,000 JEH Stallion Station Stakes for statebreds for the second straight year Saturday at Lone Star Park.

It was a neck back in second to Halo Tyra, and another 2 1/2 lengths to third-place finisher and favorite Dazed.

Woodbine: Wando wins as favorite

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wando solidified his status as the early favorite for the June 22 Queen's Plate with an authoritative 4 1/2-length victory in Saturday's Grade 3 Marine Stakes for 3-year-olds at Woodbine.

Wando set quick fractions of 22.80 seconds, 46.28, and 1:11.11 in the nine-furlong race while being pressed by Illusive Force and El Ruller. El Ruller was breathing down Wando's neck at the head of the stretch, but Wando kicked away in the final furlong to complete the distance in 1:42.61.
