ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Irish invader Fearless Flyer ($15.70) overhauled 30-1 shot Sweet Solairo in deep stretch to take Grade 3 for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine Sunday.

Sweet Solairo set uncontested fractions of :23.04 and :46.20 seconds in the one-mile turf event, while being stalked by Little Hussy, the 3-2 favorite. Fearless Flyer bided her time near the back of the 11-horse field on the backstretch, and commenced a wide rally exiting the turn en route to a length and a half victory.

Bossier City, La - Due to Win Again ran to her name Saturday afternoon as she turned in a strong performance to pick up her first stakes win of the meeting in the $60,000 River Cities Stakes. Dyna Del also came from off the pace and reported home second, a length and three quarters back, followed by pacesetter Gilded Wings.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Ghostzapper may have shown as much winning Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 by a neck as he did winning previous stakes by open lengths.

Facing a stern challenge from Saint Liam from the quarter pole to the wire, Ghostzapper prevailed to win the Woodward and put himself in contention for Horse of the Year honors. It was 9 1/4 lengths back to Bowman's Band in third.

Magistretti shows he's the man

ELMONT, N.Y. - An extra furlong made all the difference for Magistretti, the 1 1/4-length winner of Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 at Belmont Park.

Epalo, the 2-1 favorite, finished second after owning the lead up until the final yards. It was another two lengths back in third to King's Drama, who was coupled in the wagering with Epalo as a Gary Tanaka-owned entry.

Magistretti made a bold move under Edgar Prado to wear down Epalo with a sixteenth of a mile remaining in the 1 3/8-mile turf race.

ELMONT, N.Y. - The connections of Stellar Jayne knew she had talent. On Saturday, they learned their 3-year-old filly has guts as well.

After surrendering the lead to Daydreaming in upper stretch, Stellar Jayne battled back along the inside under Robby Albarado and drew away from that rival late to post a one-length victory in the $250,000 before 10,251 at Belmont Park. It was 1 3/4 lengths back to He Loves Me, who nosed out Shadow Cast for third.

Austin Barber one to catch

POMONA, Calif. - Austin Barber will employ his usual front-running style Monday in the $60,000 Derby Trial Stakes at Fairplex Park, even while cast in the unfamiliar role as co-favorite.

Well-beaten at odds of 20-1 and 42-1 in the Oceanside Stakes and La Jolla Handicap on turf at Del Mar, Austin Barber drops in class and switches to dirt Monday in the 1 1/16-mile Derby Trial.

"We gave him the two shots . . . those horses were just too good," trainer Ed Halpern said.

Gill gets Lone Star stalls

Michael Gill, the nation's leading owner in victories and money won and controversial for his aggressive claiming tactics, has been granted 50 stalls for the upcoming Breeders' Cup meet at Lone Star Park.

The division is expected to be trained by Gamaliel Vazquez, who has handled Gill's horses this year at Fair Grounds and Monmouth Park.

Larry Craft, Lone star's director of racing, said the meet "ties in with the end of Monmouth and the opening of Fair Grounds. It works out for him."

Day gets Quarter Horse victory

Pat Day, the third-winningest rider in history with more than 8,700 Thoroughbred victories, picked up his first win aboard a Quarter Horse on Friday night at Sam Houston Race Park. Day rode in a 400-yard match race as part of his national tour benefiting the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America.

Before Friday's race, Day had a record of one second-place finish from 13 mounts in Quarter Horse races, all in 1973.
