Beulah: Full fields for meet opener

Full fields await fans as Beulah Park begins its 67-day fall meeting Saturday afternoon.

Beulah Park, in Grove City, Ohio, is unable to compete with the slots-inflated purses offered in several neighboring states. Mountaineer Park in West Virginia, for example, offers purses two to three times larger than Beulah in comparable classes, while Hoosier Park in Indiana has a bottom purse of $7,000 compared with $4,100 at Beulah.

But the lower purse levels do not deter horsemen from running at Beulah, Ohio's oldest track.

Similar races share five entrants

It's impossible to be in two places at once. But that hasn't prevented the trainers of five horses from cross-entering in Saturday's turf features at Pimlico and Delaware Park.

The Larry Murray-trained entry of Foufa's Warrior and Tam's Terms, plus Dr. Kashnikow, Lady of the Future, and Lusty Latin are all entered in both the $150,000 John D. Schapiro Breeders' Cup Memorial, a 1 1/8-mile stakes at Pimlico, and the $100,000 Sussex Handicap, which will be contested at 1 1/16 miles at Delaware.

Elite often meet at Kentucky Cup

Before reaching stardom, Cajun Beat (left) beats Clock Stopper in last year's Kentucky Cup Sprint.

FLORENCE, Ky. - Ten years ago this month at Turfway Park, Jerry Carroll did what he has done most of his adult life: He made something out of nothing.

"The fall meet was awful, just awful," said Carroll, who owned Turfway during a pivotal 13-year period (1986-99) in the northern Kentucky track's history. "We had also just gone through a terrible feud [in 1993] with the horsemen, and we were looking to create a positive out of a negative. We thought, 'What in the world can we do to get people interested in Turfway Park?' "

Castellano gets his big horse

Javier Castellano will ride Ghostzapper in the Breeders' Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Last fall, Javier Castellano rode a horse he thought was going to change his life. Right season, wrong horse.

When Castellano guided Eurosilver to victory in the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last Oct. 4, he started dreaming about roses and the first Saturday in May. It wasn't to be, as Eurosilver developed a glandular infection in April and was forced off the Triple Crown trail.

"I thought I missed out on the opportunity of my life," Castellano said during a recent interview.

Galloping Grocer leads parade of juveniles

Friday's nominal feature is a run-of-the-mill entry-level allowance on turf, but horseplayers looking to catch a glimpse of tomorrow's headliners will focus their attention on the program's three races for 2-year-olds.

The youngster everyone will be watching is Galloping Grocer, who turned heads on Aug. 22 at Saratoga when he romped by nearly a dozen lengths in his debut and came within .20 of the five-furlong track record. Galloping Grocer was a poorly kept secret that day, going off at 4-5 and widening under a mild hand ride from John Velazquez to earn a Beyer Figure of 95.
