Fantasticat looking fine after Super win

BOSSIER CITY, La. - A day after Fantasticat's victory in the on Saturday, the colt's trainer, Bobby Barnett, and owners, Russ and Shelda Sherrod, were still enjoying the victory and had yet to make next-race plans. Fantasticat returned to his Churchill Downs base from Louisiana Downs on Sunday.

"We've not discussed a race," Barnett said Sunday. "We'll give him four or five days off and see how he is. But the horse really looks good now. He cooled out well, he cleaned his night grain up - which is always a good sign - and he looks bright and alert this morning."

No Gold Cup for Seattle Fitz

Horsephotos
Crimson Palace, winning the Beverly D., will miss Saturday's Flower Bowl and will train up to the Breeders' Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. - An impressive win in the Brooklyn Handicap in June put Seattle Fitz on the cusp of becoming a major player in the handicap division. That's about as close as he'll come, for this year, anyway.

Wet track would give 'Tiger' a boost

ELMONT, N.Y. - The remnants of Hurricane Jeanne were expected to bring as much as two inches of rain to the New York area on Tuesday. If that forecast holds true, Wednesday's card figures to be run under wet-track conditions.

An off track would move Some Kind of Tiger way up in Wednesday's featured $52,000 third-level allowance race at Belmont Park. A field of six was entered for the 1 1/16-mile race, which also offers trainers the option of making their horses eligible to be claimed for $85,000. Two runners are in for the claiming price.

Mazelman still maturing

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Fast works and a $200,000 purchase price made Mazelman look like a good thing in his June 10 debut race. But he finished fifth that day, disappointing trainer Kent Molinaro and his father, Bob, who had purchased Mazelman in February at an Ocala, Fla., sale.

They weren't disappointed Sunday at Bay Meadows, however, when Mazelman made his second start. On a day when the front was the place to be, Mazelman made the lead and was in control all the way.

What's Up Dude adapts well to blinkers

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Mike Mareina had predicted that What's Up Dude would benefit from the addition of blinkers and run a much-improved race after finishing third in the 6 1/2-furlong Silver Deputy at Woodbine on Sept. 6.

And the proof of the pudding was in the eating, as What's Up Dude, under new rider Patrick Husbands, gobbled up four rivals en route to a 4 3/4-length victory here in Saturday's $136,000 Swynford at seven furlongs.

"He's very competitive; he likes to run at horses," said Mareina, who trains What's Up Dude for Kuehne Racing.

Better luck could mean better meet for Goodridge

CHICAGO - When you go weeks without winning, a four-month race meet can seem like a long time. For trainer Ron Goodridge, the 2004 Arlington season might have seemed interminable. But when it finally ended, so did his slump.

Goodridge, 7 for 106 at the just-concluded Arlington meeting, won the first race of Hawthorne's fall-winter meet Friday. In fact, the Goodridge stable won with its first two starters over the weekend, and, with luck, it might have won two more races Sunday.

"How about that, after Arlington?" Goodridge said. "Boy, that was a terrible meet."
