Stellar Jayne a visiting star

Stellar Jayne, here winning the Gazelle at Belmont Park, has raced against Grade 1 competition in each of her last four starts.

ANDERSON, Ind. - Stellar Jayne should start as a deserving favorite in Friday night's $400,000-added Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks, but the eight others, including recent Grade 2 winner Capeside Lady, have solid designs on the race themselves.

D. Wayne Lukas brings in , one of the more accomplished fillies ever to run in the 1 1/16-mile Oaks, now in its fourth year as a Grade 3. She has been first or second in her past five starts, including the last four against Grade 1 company, and has won the Mother Goose and Gazelle at Belmont Park.

Where We Left Off, here winning the Grade 3 Matchmaker, heads one of two turf stakes on Friday's card.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - An enhanced purse structure and a revived stakes schedule should pump life back into The Meadowlands meet that begins Friday night.

"We expect to see a lot of horses and horsemen from New York," said Bob Kulina, the track's vice president for Thoroughbred racing. "Our purses will be the best in years."

The track will offer $300,000 per night, a $100,000 increase over 2003. A budget crunch last year trimmed purses and forced the cancellation of every graded stakes except The Meadowlands Cup.

New jock Cosme makes a splash

CHICAGO - Peruse the early Hawthorne Race Course rider standings and you'll find near the top an unfamiliar name, Emanuel Cosme, who won five races from 18 mounts during the three-day opening week.
