Dance Away Capote might try tougher

Now that Dance Away Capote has proven she can handle two turns in a minor stakes, trainer Graham Motion is tempted to send his 2-year-old filly into even deeper waters.

Dance Away Capote, a 12-length winner in last weekend's $50,000 Irish Sonnet Stakes at Delaware Park, has been nominated to the Frizette at Belmont Park and the Alcibiades at Keeneland. The Grade 2 Alciabiades, at 1 1/16 miles, is Friday. The Grade 1 Frizette, also at 1 1/16 miles but only a one-turn race, is next Saturday.

'Smokeclears' can end 0-for-9 skid

Whenthesmokeclears looks to be in good position to pick up his first win of the year when he faces nine others in Sunday's $40,000Gus Grissom Stakes for older Indiana-bred and -sired horses going 1 1/16 miles at Hoosier Park.

Although winless in nine starts this year, Whenthesmokeclears has been consistent going both short and long for trainer Lori Smock. In his last two starts here, he was second to Divorce Lawyer Jay and third to Red's Honor in allowance company at six furlongs.

Comeback for Wake at Noon

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Mazarine Stakes will be the feature of record here Sunday, but there will be particular interest in at least one other event on the program.

Wake at Noon, Canada's Horse of the Year and champion sprinter in 2002 and a multiple stakes winner of more than $1.5 million, will be making his first start since Jan. 3 in a 6 1/2-furlong classified allowance race.

Deputy Country eyes No. 6

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Deputy Country will be looking for his sixth stakes win this year here in Sunday's closing-day feature, the Gold Breeders' Cup for 3-year-olds and upward.

The 1 1/8-mile Breeders' Gold Cup attracted a field of seven and carries a guaranteed purse of $40,000, with $25,000 available to Breeders' Cup-eligible horses. Deputy Country, Smoked Em, Indy Lead, Bonspiel, and Iwoodificould are eligible for the BC funds.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Thomas "T.J." Kelly enjoyed many great moments during a 54-year training career that earned him a spot in racing's Hall of Fame. But winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup two years ago as the part-owner and breeder of Evening Attire was "my wildest dream come true," he said.

Kelly and his partners Mary and Joseph Grant hope to relive the moment on Saturday at Belmont Park when Evening Attire seeks to become the ninth multiple winner of the Gold Cup, and the first to win the race in non-successive years.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Kitten's Joy, the top 3-year-old turf horse in the country, enters uncharted waters in Saturday's $750,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park.

meets older horses and will be tested at 1 1/2 miles, two new experiences for him. If Kitten's Joy wins the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, he will simply be known as the best turf horse in the country.

Formerly named the Turf Classic, the race was renamed this year in honor of former Daily Racing Form columnist Joe Hirsch, who retired last November after 55 years with the paper.
